I'm creating this thread to document cylinder head information. I will link to it in the "useful threads" sticky.

If you have useful information, please post. Extraneous stuff will be deleted.

From a post SR20DEN made:

I have been waiting for a good opportunity to realease this information and this appears to be it. The VK45 titanium valves are near identical to the VQ30 valves. The only thing that is different is the total length which can be adjusted with new shims.

VQ30DE Steel valve;
Face In: 36.0 - 36.3mm
Face Ex: 31.2 - 31.5mm

Stem In: 5.965 - 5.980mm
Stem Ex: 5.945 - 5.960mm

Length In: 97.32 - 97.82mm
Length Ex: 94.85 - 95.35mm

Valve seat angle 45º15' - 45º45'

VK45 Titanium valve;
Face In: 36.0 - 36.3mm
Face Ex: 31.2 - 31.5mm

Stem In: 5.972 - 5.980mm
Stem Ex: 5.962 - 5.970mm

Length In: 96.57mm
Length Ex: 94.50mm

Valve seat angle 45º15' - 45º45'

The faces and the seat angles are identical. The stems are slightly different only because the expansion rates are slightly different between the metals. They're both classified as 6mm stems.

The only question that remains is the location of the keeper. If it's high enough on the Ti valve then there is no problem. If it's too low then custom retainers will be needed to make them work.

has anyone tried swapping in the titanium VK valves and just re-shiming?

does anyone know what the vk45 bucket diameter is? also does anyone know of any oe buckets that are anywhere between 36 - 36.5mm OD that are a minimum of 21mm in height? i'm looking to put 2mm oversize buckets in my vq35, but i'd like to see if i can just use buckets from an existing car instead of getting them custom made. height doesn't matter i can machine it down to size as long as it's not shorter than stock. tia. also if anyone has specs on the vq40 buckets, i'd appreciate that too.

TILLEYS99:

VK45 intake 31.5g
VQ35 intake 60.0g

VK45 exhaust 28.9g
VQ35 exhaust 46.8g

Both valves are almost the same size (need new buckets too shim right) the intake is .5mm smaller in the VK but still seats.

Total valvetrain weight loss of 556.8g which is 1.227lbs

So, which springs would you use if you swapped the VQ35 valves with the VK45 valves? The VK springs, or is there something aftermarket?

VK and VQ30 springs are the same, so JWT VQ30 springs would work.

Stephen,

as you mentioned earlier with VK45 intake valve size... it is: Face In: 36.0 - 36.3mm, but the VQ35 intake face has around 37.15mm though.... and that's just over 1mm larger... will we still be able to use VK45 valves on VQ35? Many people told me that with 1mm larger, it is no possible to fit VK45 valves into VQ35... has anyone tried this out yet? I know they can fit into nismo cylinder heads without a problem since those heads are machined from VQ30 heads..

I need to know it asap as I am building my N/A motor now and just bent an exhaust valve with Nismo high lift valve springs at 7600rpm... apparently those valve springs from nismo are not stronge enough either... btw, I am using Nismo Spec 1 cams and running 11.5:1 compression pistons on carrillo rods.. and tune with motec m600.

So I am looking into valvetrains now, it will be great if I can just use VK45 titanium items instead of Ferrea items... and is it true that the VQ35 intake valve weights 60 grams instead of 51 grams? (apparently on nismo website, it says the standard intake valve weights 51 grams)..

Oh... Ferrea valve weights are here for VQ35 (standard size):

Intake: 53 grams
Exhaust: 42 grams

cheers,

richie

Tilley put VK45DE valves in VQ35 heads, but it sounds like it wasn't easy.

Sorry, I was quoting information that Tilley had posted in another thread, for archiving purposes. He is the man to talk to.

So I guess going with Ferrea valve train will end up a lot cheaper and faster then...

Thanks for the helps!
