Extrude Honing

HAs anybody has their intake manifolds extrude honed. For those of you that don;t know this involves pressure pushing a puddy through the manifold which not only expands the runners, but smooths them as well. I have seen people do this with other cars and gain 8-10 WHP. Ford did this to the upper intake on their Contour SVT model and gained 10WHP. They double extrude honed it.

They gained 5 crank HP (went from 195hp/167tq in '98 to 200hp/167tq in '99-'00) and it didn't make any noticable difference in performance (although when combined with other N/A mods, the '99+ CSVT w/ extruded honed intakes made better power and had more area under the curve).

I think it would help our car out more due simply to displacement differences alone (there will be other benefits, I'm sure).

This is exactly what I thinking except for 5 crank HP? He must have not had it double honed. A 3.5L would definately benefit more due to the increase in displacement alone. I don't believe any torque would be added by doing this. Another benefit I can see would be a slight increase in gas mileage due to the more efficient air flow.

Can you only do this to metal or would this process work on composite manifolds like the DEKs?

would just polish the manifold give any gains?

I have an extra manifold laying around and this would be a cheap modd to dp, would it give any gain?

I know exactly how much it costs. I don't remember saying, or even impling, that this is a cheap modification. Our cars are expensive to modify anyways.

Because they weren't meant to be modded in the first place. And because they're surprising performers already (for what they are). Family sedans doing 0-60 in 6.6 seconds 10 years ago is pretty damn good.

you think you can get your hands or any tool that far down into a intake runner and be able to port/sand it correctly?

I agree with DanNY. Polishing the inside runners (or at least the part of them you can get to would be only useful for keeping the manifold cleaner. When an intake manifold is fully polished carbon does not build up easily on it due to the mirror finish.

The CSVT was easy to do because it had upper and lower intakes that were seperate (plus secondary butterfly valves), but my car is a single piece design from what I gather. If I'm wrong, let me know...

I believe out IM is the same type. Upper and lower. It even works the same. When you hit a certain RPM th butterfly valve opens. From what I gather the setup is almost identical
