95 Steering column (for swap)

Anybody know what I have to change or if I have to change my steering column in order to run on the 2002 Altima (or Maxima) ECU? Any wires to soder/match?

Also how hard can the power windows wiring be? Haven't opened them yet but I dunno if it's very different from the 2k2 Altima. Vsamoylov didn't seem to have that much trouble with that, but he's never on.

I have all the wiring diagrams for the 1995, but for the 2002 it's nigh impossible to find.

You'll need the 2K2 ignition switch/IMMU that talks with the chip in the 2K2 key and the 2K2 ECU. I hope you have all three.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and go here to get the FSM for $20:

Thanks a bunch. We might be able to get diagrams from the dealer since my dad knows the guy but it's nothing sure yet.

Where do I subscribe for 20$/1 day? I found a subscription form, but it requires dealer #. It says "Dealers, enter your dealer number. All others, enter a User ID which will be used to log in to the restricted areas of this website." so I used a random username. But then it said "Unfortunately, we were unable to verify your Dealer status and process this registration request."

BTW, Yes I have the 2k2 ECU (2002 3.5 5-speed Altima) and they sent me everything in the dash and around the engine. Fuse boxes and all.

Ignition switch is another mater. For now.

In fact, the engine actually came with all the wiring up to the inside of the car WITH the plug for the ECU. And I bought the whole wiring harness from somewhere else.

So as it stands now, I have TWO identical wiring harnesses. So, if anyone needs a 02 engine wiring harness (one of the two needed) for an eventual swap, let me know, I have a spare.

I checked the diagrams for the 1995 power windows/power locks and I am curious to see how complicated it was for vsamoylov to hook up his 1996 doors to the rest of the 2002 spagetti.

yeah man, the 2k2 maxima steering collumn will not fit into the 4th gen because the bracket with the 2 holes on the collumn that the studs go through to hold the collum in place is in a different place on the 5.5 gen maxima steerign collumn. understand? i might not be clear enoguh. you might be able to remove your old bracket from your 4th gen collumn and remove on from the 5.5 gen collumn and weld the 5.5 gen collum bracket onto the 4th gen steering collum. that might work. i was thinking of doing it but decided to stick with my old steering collumn. and then the problem of mounting the 2k2 wiper and headlight stalks wont be a problem anymore because they dont fit onto the 4th gen collumn but the plastic pieces on the 4th gen maxima that go around the wiper and headlight stalks wont fit over the 5.5 gen wiper and headlight stalks. sorry if i seem confusing. let me know if you need help.

vsamoylov,

Just so I know, you used the 5.5gen ignition switch/IMMU, key, and ECU, correct?

No he didn't. He still has 1996 ignition switch.

BTW, Vasily, how'd you get the wipers/headlights/flashers to work with the 1996 steering column.

Also, is it possible to keep the 1995 BCM (Body Control Module) to work the lights/power windows/power locks while running the 2002 ECU?

I'm waiting for HIM to answer, since that's not possible UNLESS he has figured a way around it.

I know that's what you keep saying he did, just trying to figure out HOW he did it, if he did it.

Sure. Here's one of his PM's, if that can help:

"sorry for the long time on the reply but i have been preety busy. well you see i am using the 96 steering collumn with my 96 steering wheel and the 96 headligh/trun signal stalks and the wiper stalks. and i have the stokc 96 ignition on there also. but $27 is cheap for it. pick it up cause u might need it if you dont like to mess around with the wiring. the only problem is that the 2k2 ignition switch has the imobilizer on it and the key has the chip in it. if you use the 2k2 ignition siwtch, you will need the key also because the imobilizer wont work without the key and the key has to be programmed. understand?"

I can't understand what he's saying.

You can NOT use the 2K2 ECU without the 2K2 ignition IMMU/key unless the 4th gen and 5th gen immobilizers are compatible, which I doubt.

I'll bet maxS, his brother, did that part.

well i wanted to keep it a secret but i tell you gus. i am using both ignitions switches. i have 2 keys. the reason for that is that the 2k2 ignition switch does not bolt onto the 96 steering collumn. so what my bro and i came up with is that the 96 ignition starts the car but the 2k2 key is used to operate the little black security box. so without the second key the car will not start. i call it my security so if somebody wants to steel the car it wont crank with just the 96 key.

and i am using the 96 headlight and wiper stalks not the 2k2 ones. read my post above why i didnt use teh 2k2 wiper and headlight stalks.

That's what I figured...autostart alarm guys do something similar.

vsamoylov - You should just wire up a push button starter instead of using the 4th gen key.

I've never done one either, however I did a turbo timer and it splices into similar ignition wires, I'd assume.

Pretty sure they come with directions and you/brother with a FSM should easily be able to wire it.

How'd you do that, Vasily? did you simply put the 2 ignition switches on the same wires so that both have to be on to work and put the 2k2 hidden under the dash? Is it complicated?

offtopic but do you plan on a dyno or track test ?

BTW, couldn't we use the 1995 BCM with the rest of the 2k2 stuff?

if you can figure out to hook up the bcm, i dont see why not. and no i didnt go to the track yet. and about the ignition switch, the 2k2 has the box on it and you have to put the key into the ignition switch and turn it and then the box gets a signal from the chip inside of the key so that the car will start. the 96 ignition is just there so i can start the car. the car will crank without the second key but will not start becasue the box on the 2k2 ignition is not getting a signal from the chip inside the 2k2 key.

You can probably just tape the 2K2 key or chip from the key to the 2K2 IMMU(box on ignition switch), ie no need to actually turn the switch, and then the 4th gen key will work just like normal without the need to use two keys.

Or to keep the 2K2+ immobilizer feature working, wire a push button starter for the 4th gen ignition switch to start the car once you've put the 2K2 key in the 2K2 ignition switch.

I'd do the push button, if you're concerned about theft, but getting the 2K2 ignition switch into the 4th gen column isn't easy?

I don't see where the problem is about two keys. I mean it's just longer for the guy to figure out how to steal your car.

Does the 2k2 key absolutely have to be from the very same car as the IMMU and ECU? I mean, I bought my 2k2 ECU from Texas, do I need to buy the very same ignition switch from these guys? Or would any switch from a 2002 Altima work fine?

It's a PITA to carry around two keys and have to insert both and turn to start your car IMHO. I'm too lazy for that and I'd rather have the BMW/Benz setup where you can leave the key in your pocket and just push a start button in my fantasy world.

As far as the key vs. IMMU vs. ECU origin goes, each has a FACTORY programmed ID code stored in them and unless all three match, the car will not start.

So, you either:

A)Get all three from the same car
or
B)Take all three in a car with power/OBD-Consult Port to a dealer and have them reprogram the key ID into the IMMU and ECU, so all three match.

You can buy a spare key with the chip off eBay or other places, however only the dealer can reprogram using their special tool(not a Consult).

Well I could call them back and ask for the IMMU/Key of the same car, but if the car works with 2 ECUs, wouldn't I NOT need that and use it from my 1995?

Yes, you would, because the VQ35 ECU is the one that will be running the engine.

One more thing, I *MIGHT* have heard awhile ago that TechnoSquare had a way around the immobilizer. I *THINK* they just flashed the immobilizer chip in the ECU with all zeros or something, so it didn't matter if the key/IMMU matched.

Really not sure though, but you might ask.

well i am not that lazy when it comes to my car being stolen. i rather put 2 keys and turn thm then walk out one day and see my car gone.

and icey2k1 is right about everything. the key has a chip in it which works the with black box on the ignition switch and then a signal from there goes to the ecu and lets the car start. so you have to have the ecu and the black box but the key can be bought and a dealer has to program it.

You'll be just as safe using ONLY the 2K2 key, so carrying/using the 4th gen key is wasted time/effort for no more security just because you can't figure out the wiring of either A)eliminating the 4th gen ignition switch or B)a simple push button starter.

Personally, I'd have the 4G key/switch(cleaner) with an alarm and the 2K2 switch/key tucked away somewhere vs. mess with the 2K2 crap.

I can't stand my wifes car with manual door locks and having to use a key vs. fob, so I know using two keys multiple times a day would chap my azz quickly.

I called the dealer and they want 80$ to reprogram it. They say as long as the ECU, immobilizer and ignition switch/key all come from a 2002 Altima, there should not be a problem. Also both the ECU and ignition key have to come from a manual trans. Altima.

wonder why they key though? the key has to be a altima key yes but manual and auto there is no difference in the key. they are all the same. kinda pricey also.

I don't think they are the same. I can't recall the exact wording that I read, but it's either due to the interlock on the auto tranny, or it's due to the clutch/starting safety on the manual tranny. I wish I could remember where the hell I read that info...
