Front crank pos.sensor necessary?

Hey,
Is the front crank position sensor necessary on a VQ30DE? Apparently the front sensor is called the "REF" sensor with the rear one being called the "POS" sensor which makes me think it is for reference or back up incase the main one on the flywheel malfunctions.
350Z's apparently use the camshaft pos. sensor for back up and have no front or "REF" crank pos. sensor at all.
The reason I ask is I'm using a Z oil pan which has no mounts for the front crank pos. sensor and I'm trying to determine if I really even need it (as long as the main on on the rear stays working).

thanks
allen

You need that crank sensor to tell the ECU the location of TDC for the pistons. Without it the car can run using the flywheel and cam sensor, but it will trigger a CEL. If you are using the 4th gen ECU your gonna need it, but if you run a standalone you can probally work around not having it.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be running a 4th gen ECU. I'll just fabricate some mounts for the sensor and be done with it.
