RPM switch.

I have been trying to read up on this with no avail.

Im planning on installing my VI this saturday. I have the whole 5th gen motor at hand so i can use anything i need, but what im concerned about is the RPM switch. Do I need one for the install? Is there one on the 5th gen motor i can use instead of buying a new aftermarket one? I know you need one of these for the MEVI, but since i have the motor, im assuming it already has an OEM one on there that can server the same purpose for me when i do my swap.

A little input would be much appreciated

No b/c it's programmed in the ECU for the 5g's.

Get a summit.

THe thing is i need it overnighted to me, and they wanted i think 30-40 extra for overnight delivery..

Locally i can get the MSD RPM switch with a 4000-4800 module kit (200RPM increments) for 116 and change. So i might end up going that route instead. Anyone have experience with the MSD RPM switches?

Summit switch + $40 overnight shipping is still less than $116 for an MSD switch... anyways I believe the MSD switch has to be modified by MSD to work with coil per cylinder ignition. Don't rock the boat, get the summit switch.

The MSD Digital #8969 does not need any pills and is adjustable from 200-15000 in 100 rpm increments and is $89.69 at Summit. Plus it has a digital RPM readout and digital settings.

The main reason why im in a rush to do this, is because my friend from san jo is coming to pick up some heads offa motor im parting out (hense my sig). Ive never done anything like this before and he offered to help since he is better with cars than i am (yet ), i was stuck with midterms n the like all last week and this week and completely forgot to order this....THATS why im in a rush to get it, i rather pay an extra 20 bucks and get it overnighted, and have someone with alot more backround help me do the install, than me just doing it on my own and being $hit outa luck if i run into a problem...

BTW, every day is race day...

BTW, i got the summit switch instead.

part #SUM-830449

Anyone know what RPM to tune it at? or what everyone recomends? I realize the Switch is designed for a v8 so the numbers are off....anyone know any exact conversions?

I think setting it to 2400 rpm will activate it at 4800 on our cars. But i know the 5th gen guys activate (stock) at around 4500ish? wouldnt 4200-4300 be better? opinions are welcome

you could just wait and install the rpm switch later. of course you wont feel the high end gains but I wouldnt pay an extra $40 bux just for shipping. I didnt hook up an rpm switch until a week later.

I believe the sweet spot for the 00vi is at around 5100 or 5200 RPMs. I havent tried messing with it myself but that seems to be the consensus on this forum. As far as what that corresponds to on switches meant for 8 cylinder engines I am not sure.

Im planning on installing my VI this saturday.
My VI was zip tied 'open' for a week until I waited for an RPM switch ...

Dyno and find out where you should open it ... simple as that.

Even if you don't have the RPM switch yet you can still dyno and figure out where to open it. Do a run with the VI tied open and do a run with it closed and see what RPM the HP #s are equal at. That's the optimal switchover point.

Not to bring this back from the dead, but I have been researching the how to on wiring the RPM switch to the VI. Summit charged me for next day saturday and ended up shipping it to me on monday...sigh...anyways.

What i want to know is, did you guys cut the black plug for the VIAS and use the wire on there (cant member the color) to run to the RPM switch to activate the valves? This is what i got from the info i have been reading on, but im kinda confused...
