3.5 cam spacers, cams, and sprockets
I'm doing my 3.5 swap right now. I had tilley drill the cams and it looks like he forgot to include the dowel pins. I'm not really understanding the need for cams to be drilled. Is it so you can shove a long dowel pin in there? If this is the case, then you need to drill a hole in the cam spacer as well. Where can you get a dowel pin?

The reason for dowels is so that there is absolutely no way the timing gears can slip relative to the cams. Not only would that create a rough running engine, but with an interference type engine serious damage could result if the gears slipped far enough.
And yes, the spacers have to be drilled, too.

If I ever get my hands on that JClaw for suggesting this to me he will be sorry.

Since im car-less right now and dont need a car for another 6 months or so, im thinking of getting a CHEAP 4th gen w/ over 200k miles, and leaving about 2.5K on the swap and getting the car to good running order overall(doing it myself). Problem is that i have almost 0 tools and little car mechanical background, but i am mechanically inclined and i belive i can do this. Would you guys recomend it for me?

I don't think I will be sorry but it is a lot of work. Of course I am doing a lot of other stuff at the same time and it will probably take me all winter to complete the project but I am really excited about doing it and it keeps me out of trouble. I do think the worst part of the work is over now and by next summer I probably won't hurt JClaw too much when I see him again.
