I just got done reading the axial play for my differential with my new bearings and races.

The problem is that i got a reading of .010-.011" on the differenital bearing movement. Now is it possible to have that little play and be installed right? And if it is i what part number should i use?

Also i didnt get any movement on my input shaft with no bearings, is this possible?

The bearings sit flush on the diff and the races all the way to the lip facing towards axles. The one thing i though curious is that the cover went on kinda difficult.

I have a 96 mt with open diff.

I assume you have the 96 FSM with the MT section right?

I just looked and it says you want 0.40 - 0.45mm (.0157 - .0177") of preload on the diff bearings, and 0 - 0.05mm (0 - 0.0020") of end play on the input shaft bearing.

From what you described, if I understood it correctly, it sounds like both are out of spec.

 

you say out of spec as there isnt enough play?

 

If I'm understanding what's going on correctly then I think you want the .0268" diff shim based off my calculations which is PN 38453-96E07, but you said you don't think the race is seated all the way in our AIM convo, so that will likely change once you get the race seated.

 

When you said "i didnt get any movement on my input shaft with no bearings" did you mean with no SHIMS installed?

I just got it to work. I took it back apart, made sure everything was seated correctly, and tried again and this time I got some readings.

I replaced the input and the differential bearings. The diff reading came out fine, the shims in there are 4 sizes too big for me. The input end play was off the chart in the FSM, though, I don't know what that means. The last range for input bearings is 1.65-1.69mm, my end play came out to be 2.01mm. I guess I will just order a combination of shims to make it work, even though it is out of the range on the chart.

I thought about going ahead and replacing the main shaft bearings since they came in my bearing kit, but I really don't feel like trying to measure for those and they really don't look too bad. I think plastigauge would work, but I am not going to try.

 

yeh my problem was that something wasnt seated right. I might double check that input shaft. I think that your tollarance should fall into a range listed. Never hurts to be parranoid. Im not sure but i would like to think that the plastic piece on the end of the shaft would have to be on for your measurement.

Also with the main shaft i figure when and if they go its too much work and time to get a new tranny.

 

Here are a few pics of the method I used to check the axial play in the main and input shafts without shims installed.

Drilled and tapped 3/8-24 holes in the transmission case at both ends of the main shaft and one end of the input shaft


Used the bolts as jack screws with a dial gauge at the other end to measure play


I then jb-welded setscrews in the tapped holes with the ends ground flush with the inside of the housing
