Motor Prep

Well im about to put in a slightly newer vq30 in my 4th gen, and was wondering what kind of things I should do to the motor itself before I put it in. I have already took off the headers to clean up a bit and same with intake manifold, throtlebody, and valve covers. Anything else I might want to do?

Plugs, PCV valve, clean the IACV, more than likely the EGR port that goes to the intake manifold will be clogged with carbon deposits. And now would be a good time to replace the fuel filter too.

I was thinking of removing the EGR system, also I would like to get some large pipe cleaners and put them on the end of a high speed drill and clean the intake manifold. As for pulgs, filters, hoses, ect, I had that in mind. Just wanted to get strickly motor related things that would improve performance and such.

you either dont' do any performance prep or do it all at once. Doing a few mods won't get you satisfied if you want performance. So before the motor goes in, you either go the whole 9 yards or don't walk the road at all. That's just my suggestion. I went 10 yards before I finally dropped the VQ in the bay.

Listen to Godfather - he knows what he's talking about.

I'd remove the EGR altogether (if emissions laws permit), replace headers, 00vi lower/upper/290ccinjectors swap, Adj. FPR, cams, new tensioners, 3 angle valve job, and change the Clutch/ and cryo tranny gears. Install polyurethane motor mounts too.

And afterwards drop it the engine. It is so MUCH easier to work wen the engine is OUT! (i did my mods with engine in the bay -- PITA!!!)

Thats the way im going with this project. I have a NEW 5 speed VLSD tranny, 5th gen clutch, pressure plate, SS clutch line, throwout bearing, slave cylinder, ect. As for 00VI i was thinking about it but havent tracked down all the parts yet, so that might be a down the road kind of thing, and the headers im not willing to spend the money on right now if im not FI or going with the 3.5 swap. I have been toying with some 3.5 or FI setups but thats for another thread.

Why not suggest high-compression pistons, nismo oil pump and extrude honed manifolds while you're at it??

Seriously... might as well find an AEBS stroker kit as well.

depending on the mileage of the motor, maybe a new water pump and VQ35 oil pump also

this guy sounds like he wants to do something, but wouldn't have all the money to toss into it. So, he'd better stay stock.

This is what I was looking for when I posted. Just some comon items that I might have overlooked, Maybe some stuff that I can use from other nissan motors. Not that a huge overhaul of the motor wouldnt be great, I'd rather dump a 3.5 in and then go nuts with that. But Im sick of driving my truck and want the max back on the road ASAP. Thanks for the info guys.

If you have a 2nd vehicle, I would do the VQ35 swap.

If I can find a relatively cheap one around Montreal, anyone can, even if you hypothetically lived in some ultra-backwoods-redneck state.

Ive found alot of good stuff on car-part, and after just taking a look I found one not to far away for $800 with 65k. I think my next day off Ill be in Southington, maybe buying a 3rd motor.
