Street Tuning discussions
Car: 2k2 Nissan Max 6spd
Tuning Device: Apex-i V-AFCII
Wideband o2: PLX R300
1. Whats a good AFR I should be shooting for narrow throttle settings? I kinda did some ghetto street tuning earlier with my friend...basically we was looking at the AFR gauge while I was driving it..and we were able to get the car in the 13.5 +/- 3 range (tuning thru the V-AFCII)....this is from 1500-4000 narrow throttle pulls (25% gas)....should I lean it out more and shoot for 14.7?
2. How is datalogging with a 2nd gear pull on a 6mt? It goes up to 65mph if I redline it...just wondering if I could get good AFR #s by doing a 2nd gear pull instead of 3rd (which goes up to 93ish)....Don't wanna get in too much trouble
3. On my V-AFCII, what exactly are these narrow/wide throttles? I mean I assume one is for part throttle, the other is for WOT...but when I went in for a dyno tune, I was going WOT the whole time....but I still ended up with narrow throttle maps...how am I suppose to know my narrow throttle settings if I am going WOT on the dyno/street?
basically any more info discussing street tuning would be appreciateD! thanks

Just do 3rd gear, or even 2nd unless you spin the tires in 2nd. You're NA so AFR isn't going to change in different gears much anyways, if at all, like it would in a turbo car that sees more boost in higher gears. Also 4th gear to redline would have you going really fast for a really long time, not exactly the smartest thing to do.

I'm thinking about the 2nd gear pulls...its the safest bet so far since it only takes me up to 65mph....and I can always get on it during the freeway on ramps....lets see if my AFR is hard to read in a 2nd gear pull
oh yeah, can anybody answer the narrow/wide throttle settings?

Got mine installed this weekend also and got a few pulls done on the interstate on the way home.
Not sure about narrow settings with a 5.5 gen. I know only wide throttle changes will work on a 4th. I did notice the ECU likes to keep it at or over 14.7 in narrow.

3rd gear would be a good gear to tune in, as you wont go nearly as fast as 4th WOT to redline.

Tuning in the gear closest to 1:1 only matters when trying to compare your DYNO to different gear ratio cars. It kind of levels the playing field. Most just use whichever gives the higher numbers.
3rd gear gives a long enough data sample to tune with...2nd is kind of short and 4th on the street isn't practical at least on the 5spd.

4th would be the best either for street or dyno....if you have the room to do it, use 4th...I know some of ya'll live like in the middle of nowhere....as for me, I live in crowded southern california...
if I want to use 4th, I'd have to do it real late at night...and be real careful

dangerous as in....crashing or blowing up the motor? I understand crashing or getting arrested by the police....but I don't see these VQs blowing up from a couple of highway runs...I've done it many times and not a single problem with my engine...no oil consumption or coolant leaks etc...
I mean all I'm sayin is...if u have the room and guts to do a 4th gear pull...go for it....it will give u the best AFR reading....3rd should give a clean run as well...but if u want the absolute best, 4th is the way to go....right neal?

On the dyno my A/F was different between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. The A/F got progressively richer in scale with every gear increase. The dyno operator (Darren @ R&D Dyno) suggested that since the car was on more load with a higher gear, the A/F was richer
