6 Speed Swap

I used the search and found that someone had managed a 6 speed swap on a 4th Gen. What all does this entail? And is it worth it?

Its worth it if you plan an an all-out NA setup and lots of racing, or boost. Otherwise, dont bother. With a good clutch-flywheel combo, I would estimate about 1800$ total for parts only. That is if you do it yourself.

From what I know:
Need 2002-2003 shifter, cables, CAR MOUNT*, starter, ..
Can use 02-05 6speed tranny and axles
You can use the 4th gen master cyl, but you need 6speed slave cyl
You use the 6speed clutch as well.
You can either weld a vq30 timing ring on the 6speed flywheel, you can machine the timing ring on the 6speed to look like the vq30 timing ring, or you can use the 5speed flywheel/timing ring and use a spacer that Fred Allen sells for about 150.

Now for the *
The mount on the 4th gens is already welded to the car, on 5th gens it is bolted. I am told we need to weld this mount on the car. Or we can trill and add bolts/nuts. But I am told it is better to weld, so it is up to the installer on that decision.

I am sure I am missing a few things, I will add them as I remember.

Thanks for the info. I plan on turbo'ing and 00VI, maybe a flat out DEK swap. So I'm definitely looking ahead to getting a little more than just a six puck and flywheel on the 5 SPD.

If you'll end up doing a 6-speed swap, I have a spare 6-speed tranny with clutch and flywheel in my closet. I bought it with 5k miles on it. Ever since it's shipped to me, I have never cut the wrappings, yet. I decided to drop the installation project because the required work is beyond my grip. Since you're in Texas, I'm in Louisiana, I do not mind meeting for a "local pick up" between the 2 states.

Yeah I would STRONGLY suggest picking up a HSLD if youre going through all this work. It will make or break this swap. Its almost like a Quaife in a 5sp.

I got this off a 2002 6-speed Maxima; don't think this one has the HLSD tranny. How can I tell? and what's the pizzaz about it? Can someone humor me? I haven't been on the org for pretty long since couple months.

Kevlo, you said the mount for the 4th Gen is welded on. Exactly what do you mean? The tranny is on a swivel? I.E. one side can be lowered but the other would have to be torched or plasma'd off and then rewelded or drilled?

There is a mount on the tranny that bolts up to the car. On 4th gens, the car mount is welded to the frame. On 5th gens it is bolted to the frame.

hey, what would the same parts be needed to convert a 5.5 gen into 6 speed? i know people say that might as well get a 6 speed, but if i can get a real good deal on a 5.5 auto w/ everything i want, I really want to drop in a 6 speed. I have mechanic who can hook me up w/ the labor.

Its ALOT harder to swap that in, search for the person that tried it in the 5th gen forums. Lots of ECU problems.

Well I have a 6-speed and thats all that counts

Well all that counts is that I wont be doing any more maxima 5-speed tranny overhauls. It got slightly tiresome.

bump for that answer.

In fact I was wondering altogether...say you were doing a 3.5 Swap with the 6-speed and you wanted to do the 3.0 timing parts swap, and you wanted to put in a 3.0L flywheel. You'll have to use this spacer then to get it working huh?

hmmm, that's a good point.
I had kind of wanted to keep the 3.0 flywheel because I read somewhere here that it's lighter than the 3.5 by almost 10lbs. But hey, I'll see what to do when the time comes.
