reluctor ring

when installing a flywheel, how easy would it be to damage the reluctor ring?

On an A33B?
6MT or 5AT?

The 6MT is thicker (~1/8" plate) and is welded on.

You won't damage it by hand but if the flywheel is dropped, you will knock it out of true. The sensing face on the crank sensor is wider than the ring though so you should be able to straighten it out sufficiently so it will work. I had to on mine when I did my swap because it warped a little from the welding.

The 5AT ring is a much lighter gauge and is bolted on. It is pretty easy to bend but it can also be straightened easier.

As long as the ring is still round but just a little out of true, it is repairable.

6mt, according to nissan the reason my 3.5 will not start is that the reluctor ring was damaged somehow. are you saying that they could possibly just straighten it out somehow and it would be fine?

They can tell if the signal plate is damaged by watching the crank signal pulses while the engine is cranking. If they are not in the correct pattern, the sensor is not reading all of (or too many) gaps, there is a problem with the signal plate.

Obviously whether it can be repaired or not depends on the type and severity of the damage to it. You cannot determine this until the flywheel is removed.

However, the dealer is not going to screw around trying to get it into spec. They will just replace the flywheel.
