3rd gen VQ35DE Full ECU Swap

Time to add the NWP Engineering 92 Maxima Project Car to the list!

This is the first known FULL ECU 3.5L swap into a 3rd gen Maxima.

1992 Maxima SE
Original Automatic (RE4F04V) w/ 203K miles on it (had to swap TC housings from a VQ30 trans)
Engine from 02 Maxima with 49K miles
FULL ECU swap with 02 Maxima ECU, NATS, ignition switch, steering wheel, and cluster all from same vehicle
4th gen crossmember was attached to custom brackets made by NWP then welded to frame of car
4th gen passenger axle was used in order to use the VQ passenger axle support bracket
Stock 3rd gen hubs and stock driver's side axle

Engine Modifications:
Headwork (valve seats lapped, full port and polish job) by NWP
JDM Camshafts
SSIM by Goodwin Motorsports
TB, Elbow, UIM, and LIM all fully ported by NWP
NWP Engineering Thermal Intake Spacers
HR head gaskets w/ coolant passage modified on block
HR valve springs dbl shimmed
HR head bolts
New valve seals
Revup oil pump
ARP rod bolts
Nismo SR20DE adjustable fuel pressure regulator mounted on fuel rail for a return style system
Currently running stock 02 Maxima ECU, UTEC soon to be installed
McCord Power Plate electric exhaust 2.5" cutout
3.5L Altima eBay headers
Custom Mandrel bent equal length Ypipe from Headers to Cutout
PLX Devices M300 wideband (may need to get a Turbo XS Tuner wideband to work with UTEC)
Polyurethane filled 4th gen Maxima engine mounts
Solid custom mount on timing cover side of engine
Stock 3.5 Tstat slightly modified (w/ spacer) for reduced opening temperature

Transmission Modifications:
Original VE30DE transmission (203K miles) from 92 Maxima with 4th gen TC housing
Maximum Tuning VB recalibration
Suprastick TCM running as full standalone
Manual engagement of TC lockup and Overrun Clutch
EdgeRacing High Stall Torque Converter 3000 stall

12.76 @ 108 mph ALL MOTOR in 85 degree weather. Low 12s soon to come!

Problems After Swap:
Engine fired up the VERY FIRST TIME without any problems! The only other issues I ran into was getting the stock TCM to work. Had to buy a Suprastick.

Please visit the 3rd gen Swap Progress Thread which should tell you everything you need to know:

Completed mine Nov, 2007.

Year of Car: 95 SE

Transmission Type:5spd

Year of Engine: 2003, was told 33k miles

Engine Modifications: intake, ypipe, 3" exhaust, stock 4th gen upper and lower intake manifold, stock 3.0L cams, 370cc side feed injectors because I was still using stock 4th gen IM at this time, Aeromotive AFPR, 3.0 timing equipment and ECU. After I completed 3.5IM swap in July, 2009, I used a JabaayFab intake adaptor pipe to mount the IACV and stock 4th gen throttle body, rather than remote mounting the IACV and modifying/hacking up the 3.5 Throttle Body. stock 350z injectors used after IM swap.

Transmission Modifications: PPG 3rd and 4th straight cut gears, Quaife LSD, deburred, detailed, polished, and shot peened 1st, 2nd, 5th gears, input shaft, main shaft and ring gear, ACT HD Pressure Plate, Clutchnet 6 puck sprung hub disk.

Dyno Numbers: unknown, 185whp/220wtq estimated

Tuned (Yes / No): AFR tuned, timing is not advancable with Emanage blue. using stock 4th gen timing

Track Times (List Type of Tire, i.e. Street Tires / Drag Radials / Slicks): 13.26 @ 103mph slicks, 13.60 @ 102mph street tires (these are 3.0L Intake Manifold times, new times coming soon with 3.5IM installed)

Problems After Swap: had a tiny coolant drip coming from water pump weep hole immediately after swap, but the drip went away within a day and has not shown itself since. 3.5IM fitement with 3.0 valve cover as described below.

Other: I used 3.0 valve covers in the front and rear because the 3.5 valve covers were broken. I would definitely NOT suggest doing this. In order to use 3.0 valve covers, the 3.5 cam caps have to be irreversibly modified (you need to do some grinding on them to make the 3.0 valve covers seal against them). in using the 3.0 valve covers I made it very difficult to install the 3.5 intake manifold. the 3.5 intake manifold needs to be raised up with a spacer approximately 7/8" and you need to use a VQ30 front coil in for the middle rear cylinder (because the intake manifold barely clears the low profile VQ30 front coil, and will NOT clear a stock 3.0 rear coil or stock 3.5 coil, you MUST use a VQ30 front coil in the rear if you do the swap this way. my advice is do it right the first time with 3.5 valve cover on the rear). I finally completed the intake manifold swap to the stock 3.5IM in July, 2009.

Picture taken after completing the 3.5 Intake Manifold swap in July 2009.

wat??

are you doing a hybrid swap? or the full swap? either way the answer is pretty straight forward.

I'll assume you're doing the hybrid swap. use your 3.0 sensor and 3.0 upper oil pan then install everything normal like you would on a 3.0 including sensors

also this is the wrong place to post your question. this is a thread for those who completed their swaps to post their specs. I'd suggest posting in an existing. 3.5 question thread. or read the stickies then delete your post from here before its deleted for you.

VQ35 swap problems

Alright, so I had performance and styling do a VQ35 swap in my 99 maxima in September and since then I've had some issues with it. I can drive my car for about 10 minutes and then it starts to act up. The car starts to buck really hard while driving, I will try to get on the gas and it acts like I'm not and then it will buck forward and this will continue on. Any ideas? When I had my swap done the kid said my exhaust was "hacked up" but I don't hear anything blocking or clogging my exhaust. This phenomenon started happening after I took it on the highway for the first time.

I have not puilled coil packs yet to see if there is spark or not. I borrowed an OBDII reader and it stated NO codes which is very odd because before I did all this work there were codes on there for the cats due to me having aftermarket ones, so Im not sure if computer cleared them after having no power for over a week or what.

You could be onto something here. For everybody that posts, please put the year of your auto, transmission slot, dyno results or track times, and any viable appropriate data like reseller's exchange cams, secondary selling fuel pump, grasp utilized, intake/exhaust setup, motor administration, and so forth. Bear in mind to post up your outlines or Timeslips in the event that you have them.
