SSIM 3.5 intake mod

So I have been hearing about this intake manifold mod that people have done but cant seem to find anything in stickys about it. I talked to one member about it but was looking to maybe get some pics or more info if anyone had it. Im starting my 3.5 swap in 2 weeks so im hoping to make a decision on whether to run the variable intake or not.

you gut out the 'shelf' in the Upper Intake Manifold. It adds top and and you lose low end.

This mod works best with raising the rev limiter to 7200, using aftermarket cams, and for the motors saftey you should replace the rod bolts with new ones from ARP.

Do you really think the rod bolts are necessary?

Yes.

Is it worth the risk?

7100 seems to be safe with stock rod bolts. Anything higher, rod bolts should be mandatory.

Arn't hte stock rod bolts strong enough for any power that people have put down N/A in our cars? I thought it was only an issue at or above like 350whp.

When raising the rev limiter it's reccomended to change the bolts.

Power doesn't kill the OEM rod bolts, revs do.

RB's are more prone to failure due to high engine speeds rather than power levels.

I think ill just leave the rev limiter for now. Plus aftermarket cams are way outa the price range for now. Maybe down the road.

In order to take full advantage, an extended rev limiter would help, along with a few other items. 95BLK has done real well with his set-up, and he doesn’t have said limiter extension.

He has the stock limiter? Right now i just want to get it in and running. Once im done i have a dyno that i can use at school so i may try both and see what the numbers look like when a play around with it a bit.

Just curious. While reading the thread/link 00SEMAX19 posted I had a question about the SSIM. When the shelf is cut out, do you cut off the VIAS butterfly section of the end cap and use just the end as a cap or is te butterfly left connected?

Well i have two intake manifolds so im gonna do one with the SSIM mod and the other with the variable and then put it on the dyno at school. Might as well then we can see what the reall difference is.

Whatever is easier for you. Some people have made a custom block off plate so they can retain the power valve in case they want to go back to stock. I think Aaron92SE might have one in production so check with him.

Someone called?

Notice that for some reason, my ECU doesnt even go to the "stock" redline. It bounced off just before 6400 (dunno why, but w/e, ^^ my power curve is pretty healthy)

Better gearing for the useless first 2 gears of our 5spd trannies is a reason.

Thank you. The thread mentions that the expected cost is $50-60.

This plate is made out of a high quality 6061 Billet Aluminum and it's completely CNC Machined with the NWP Logo in raised lettering. Then, the piece is deburred, tumbled and polished to create a flawless block plate. This plate we make is meant for those that care about what their engine bay looks like, which is most 5th & 6th gen Maxima owners.

Mine is a 4th gen but if you can get the plate i would gladly pay the 50 or 60 bucks for it. 95BLKMAX did you ever have the variable hooked up on yours?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it has a 5.5 gen engine, correct, or at least that’s the plan.

Nope. Never bothered after seeing all these dynos with stock operating VIs with the drop off on power after just ~5500. Yea thats great for the midrange but... Im more for top end power so I never bothered to get a window switch for it.
