4th gens with 5th gen airboxes, please step in

So after completing my 3.5 swap and just using a short ram pipe and placing a cone filter next to my battery like everyone else, I contemplated making a new airbox or intake to draw in some cooler air. I drew up sketches, ideas, everything from using a bigger airbox from another vehicle and running flex tubing to draw in cold air...to designing my own out of aluminum... to the simple drilling a hole in my fender under the battery tray. I thought about putting an airbox up top where the factory one goes, to even extending the intake pipe and placing the airbox where all the room is down in the engine bay under the battery tray.

Too many options, and all seemed a little too complicated. Im still breaking in my motor and havent been able to get on it too much to take notice to the entire powerband, and lack of bottom end which everyone said is where the 3.5'd 4th gens lack power with the SSIM.

My objectives are pretty much just to have the least restrictive intake with optimal airflow by cold air (dont we all)... I want the low end torque which can be gained by keeping everything in a box up near the battery still and i know a few members were running the 5th gen OEM box with great success...so i think?? lol

I mean if anyone else has any other ideas..im all ears

I think im making it more complicated than it really is but i was hoping those that have the 5th gen airbox or other setups could shed some light.. obviously i dont want something thats gaudy or an eyesore to my engine bay as well...

This is what I did. I used an old intake hose from a 94 Grand Am, an adaptor from autozone, and presto! Stock A32 airbox. Some people criticize the bend being too restrictive (opinion), but it turned out really clean and functional. This allowed me to retain the cold air scoop on the radiator support as well.

Your results may vary.

nice clean setup! i can see how it can seem to be resrictive because of the 90* bend but hey, it works. Did you modify the snorkel or other piping below to draw in more air?

No, completely stock from the MAF sensor to the radiator support.

nice, now correct me if im wrong kev... the reason for the mid box in your setup is that it will allow that sudden burst of air kept in that box, to enter the motor from a stop. While as once your moving your still pulling in cold air from the fender... "best of both worlds"

I changed out the ram air pipe shown in the pic for the exact OEM mid box back when i was still using the 3.0 and felt the difference down low but i might have to add the CAI pipe. I dont really wanna cut a hole in my fender but i might have to..

the only thing steering me away from using a factory airbox is the source of drawing in cooler air without using the restrictive oem ducts..

That is basically it, although when moving it really doesn't make much of a difference. I doubt there is much of a hp difference. But from the different setups I have had. With the 00vi; the 5th gen mid pipe and prcai tube feels great overall.

The perfect intake

I use the same setup but with the 4th gen midpipe. I also found it to be the best after trying straight cai, stock, pop, etc.

I installed a complete stock 5th gen intake system in my car, and I love it. I've tried all of the setups; HAI, PRCAI, etc, and this one is my favorite as far as power and sound. Then again, I like things sleeper-ish and quiet

I made a writeup in this thread, if it may help any:

exactly what i was looking for crime. you said you noticed the power down low but did it change in the mid or top at all for better or worse??

awesome setup! i'm doing a 3.5 swap and have been wondering about intake ideas...

is there a difference between the 5th gen and 5.5 gen intake setup? also...would CRiME's setup work with a 3.5 swap? i'm assuming the throttle bodys would be pretty close to the same place with 00vi or 3.5....correct?

im gonna attempt to use mine with my 3.5 swap... im working on buying an entire 5th gen intake and then ill innovate from there.

i even considered using the 4th gen airbox and shoving in the cone filter im using in the first pic. then using the 5th gen mid box since the 4th gen wont fit, and then run piping to get cool air into the box.

i still dont see how any/ much air gets sucked in through the oem snorkels..but they work...
