Preparing for Dyno day--AFR

I have finally decided to see what the Maxx does on the dyno. A local shop is having a Dyno day and really want to get my car prepped up(tuned) proper to get the most hp I can from it. Not sure if they would allow me to tune it between each pull, but I really doubt it!

I'm trying to find out at what A/F ratio i should really be targeting? I currently have it hitting at around 13.2-13.5 across the board.
I'm excited for it cuz i've never dyno'd before. And I really havent taken the car to the track since the tune and full exhaust upgrade.

I was hoping to get an unmodified inatke manifold to compare SSIM, stock, and VIAS delete on my car, but money's kinda tight!

I couldnt passs up on the offer to dyno it-- 3 pulls for 40.00.

Anyways, back on topic... hehehe

Can anybody help me?
I've searched but couldnt really find anything specific.

If they won't let you tune between pulls you are wasting your time going to the dyno, that what its for, to tune your car.

I run my a/f in the 12.8 area, but then I don't dyno so I am probably not the person to listen to.

The whole purpose of the dyno is to determine what a/f and timing combo gives you the most power. (I think)

PS On the intake thing. I thought I had the best combo with the 350Z setup but i swapped it for the stock im last weekend and ran a 12.5 @ 111 which is my best time and mph this year. I only did one run like that because I had to de-tune to try and run a 13.0 1/4. It took reducing my timing from 26 deg to 16 and reducing my shift points from 7000 to 5800 to slow it down to a 13.0. I might add that I did win the 13.0 index class with that setup.

A lot of VQs run a 12.8 target AFR throughout the RPM range and some have it actually dip to 12.6 or something near redline.

From what I understand this allows us to run more aggressive timing and make more power.

It's upto the dyno tuner to decide which AFR is the best, but 12.8 seems to be the magic number for 3.5s and DE-Ks alike.

12.8, really? I read 13.8 as the sweet spot and I myself will be tuning for 13.5 and maybe 13 above 5k...

Congrats on your victory!
I'll have to just go and tune it the best I can there and see what I come out with. I guess i'll keep it at 13.2's and then lean it out each run and see whats best!

So I just got back from dyno'ing...
I'm satisfied(just wanted to make sure I was above 200whp LOL!), 227hp@6000rpm and 208tq (4th gear pull) not sure if it should have been done in 4th or not. This was my first time on a dyno.

I first ran around 213hp, then219hp, then finally 227, with dips down to 12.7range around 5200-5800rpm range. it seemed to have the best pulls shooting for 13.2's. I messed up not recording my first run because I wasted the shot of having one more opportunity to fien tune it. A/F was rich(12.4-12.8's on the final run between 2800-3400rpm range.
I di not get a chance to replace my TPS, which I finally figured out is the cause of my hesitations between shifts(not sure if it might have affected it).

I think I can squeezs out another 10-15hp(hopefully) fine tuning throught the rpm band!
I'll post up the Dyno chart and A/F maps once I get a chance!

Nice numbers.
Does the ts have an extended limiter?

sadly no. You can see on the dyno runs that hp kept climbing but they shut it off at 6000. I wish they would have pushed it those 400rpms more. LOL
I might go back next month to see if I can increase those #s.

those are practically identical to my results at the dyno day I went to. Was it a mustang dyno? I was dynoed in 3rd gear though which is apparently the "wrong" gear.

Runfiles?
What type of dyno?
Which gear?

The hesitation between gears may the 3" MAF. If I were you, I would put the stock you back on, adjust your AFR, and take it back to the dyno. That larger MAF may be slowing you down.

Mustang dyno
will upload runfiles
4th gear

Its actually the TPS that's causing the issue. If I disconnect the TPS and run it, the issue is gone!

Ill have some different set ups when I go next time. And I might actually get a full hrs worth of dyno'ing, which will give me plenty of time to make corrections.

I've given thought of going back to stock size or a Z32 MAF.

This was my 1st time... its all uphill from now.... hopefully! lol

If at all possible, try to find a Dynojet. They are much better dynos. Also try it in 3rd gear. What were the conditions, i.e. temp, humidity, etc?

I know i'll get better numbers off of 3rd, but isn't it ideal to dyno off of 4th!? Isn't that the best 1 to 1 ratio?

Not sure humidity, conditions, etc.... and we're very limited to dynos in my area.

yes, 4th is closer to a 1:1 ratio...

Couldnt scan the dyno sheet, so here it is. I took a pic of it and uploaded it.
I'll try to get the A/F maps on here tomorrow.

Its still climbing when they cut it off..... that sucks huh! Anoter 400rpms could have given me maybe 228-230whp... maybe!

Depends on if you are 'sniffing' the O2 sensor AFR from up near the manifold or a sniffer probe up the exhaust tip. They each give different values due to extra oxygen content at the rear of the car...

4th gear is definitely the better gear to allow the engine to rev up slower with torque multiplication via 3rd gear giving a slightly false reading.

i dont even want to know what my horsepower would have been in 4th gear if it was inflated in 3rd gear then

So i've finally scanned and uploaded the A/F map files... here they are:
keep in mind, it wasnt tuned out completely....like I said, i messed up on the first pull (first time dyno excitement.hehe) so it really didnt give me to much time to focus on tuning throughout the rpm range.

I was focused on tuning from 5000-6400, which still dipped down into some rich numbers

and the dyno just to compare on the same screen
