The 5MTs are actually stronger than the 6MTs from 02-03, so as long as you have a good clutch you should be fine.

so you got a brand new VLSD 0k from nissan for 1k man thats good & the altima se-r motor will be $800 or was $800 the cost of labor for trans & engine together. reason y im askin is because i have a 00 auto w/ 173,000 miles, im about 80/20 on doing a 5speed swap but i want to get the best deal & i was thinking of doing a 3.5 motor swap too.

thanks

It will hold just fine. I can count all the maximas 3.5 in the world who have built 5 speeds on one hand.

the 6spds are slightly stronger actually. but a 5spd should have no problem what so ever with an NA VQ35.

synchros "shattering" doesn't have anything to do with how strong a transmission is - syncrhos have nothing to do with how much power a transmission can hold, they don't transfer power. they are friction components that simply match gear and shaft speeds. the synchros in a car making 1000hp have no more or less stress on them than a car making 200hp.

6spds are quite a bit stronger than 5spds are, there is no question.

how long a transmission lasts has a lot to do with how you drive it. if you're really raping the car, the 5spd may not hold up forever. if you don't absolutely thrash it though I'd expect it to last a number of years at least.

the trans will hold up man, no need to worry. just stay away from philly, something about philly and blown transmissions *COUGH jean COUGH*. but if your worried, use synthetic gear oil as added protection, and please dont use unsprung, or puck clutch setup.

+1 (Even 5th gen 5spds).

hell put me on that list, my 5spd needs the classic ISB and a new 3rd gear synchro, then it'll be fine... Considering how hard it's been driven I'd say that's not too bad...

5sp should hold for a long time depending how you drive it. I think most issues come when guys start boosting the 3.0/3.5's.

3.5 swappers should throw in an auto while they are at it (at least when they go with FI).

One friend (VQ35 AE) has been through 4 tranny's, 1 5th gen and 3 4th gens, on his last 4th gen tranny he lost 3rd gear (Wouldn't go in no matter what) then 4th gear.
