Tuning 3.5 Swap

Im a little unsure on how to go about getting my 3.5 swapped maxima tuned. The car is a 97 Maxima, running a stock ecu, but I was planning on ditching the 97 ecu and running a 95 ecu to eliminate 2 pending codes (map/boro and evap codes). My question was, will only installing a safc on the stock ecu yield any sufficient power gains or must I have an aftermarket ecu like a jwt ecu to get gains during the dyno tune? Id prefer to save the $500 that Id spend on a jwt ecu and stay with the stock ecu if ill be able to squeeze any power out with just a safc and a dyno tune. If you guys do recommend for me to go the jwt ecu route, will a 95 jwt ecu work fine in my 97 Maxima. I know that a stock ecu will work fine, just not sure if a jwt ecu will. Don't see why it won't, but Id just like to be certain before I go out spending money. Lastly, is there any generation or model safc that you'd recommend over another?

you can get good a/f tune from the safc. yes, a 95 ecu will work in your car, and yes a jwt ecu will work in your car.

VAFCII has more correction points to offer than the SAFCII

You can also tune with tape. If you have a A/F gauge you can lean out your top end. Essentially what a SAFC or VAFC will do. Granted its red neck but it's so cheap and easy to do!

Thats what grey99max did (top link) and I did the exact same thing on my z32 MAF (bottom link)

http://forums.maxima.org/1-4-1-8-mil...uner-tape.html

I used aluminum tape, you only need a very little amount to get it right. You won't get it the first time but its easy to nail the A/F you want. Don't worry if the tape gets sucked into your motor (throwing that out there) the motor would eat it without thinking twice about it.

Just saying this is an alternative, not sure why many don't use this, saves money and gains performance. After all don't we want the mods that give hp for little cost, hmm?

Id be a little scared to rev past the stock redline on a 3.5. 2-step is only good at the track. The rest can be tuned by tape!!! Go TAPE!!!

Honestly its like $500 plus time or $5 for tape plus 1 hour to have it tuned. Try the tape first, if you want more then go to the emanage. People praise this damn emanage like its the best, but its not the greatest thing. It will cost you a nice coin to have it tuned/dynoed if you don't no what your doing.

MoncefA33 do you have an Emanage?

e-Manage lets you control timing, that's the biggest thing for tuning a N/A car.

Yes I do.

Best option IMO is the E-manage.

Ok, wasn't sure. Your right about the timing, I'm not sure but I believe the tape trick also will cause the timing to change (not sure if it advances or retards the timing though).

I just feel the MAF tape trick is so stupid simple that it should be tried first. It's essentially free.

Free aside from a WB.... Eng92 did something similar by taping his cone filter. Less direct vs the sensor but same concept.

I would follow their footsteps, however, I don't have a wideband installed atm to monitor air fuel ratios. Emanage looks like some great software, but I really don't want to dish out the $600 for it plus the cost to have it installed. Im leaning more towards an safc2. Is there any generation that does the job better than another?

Check the classified section. If I remember correctly, there is an EU for sale with plug and play harness for under $500.

An eu is not in the budget for me atm. Paying for the eu itself, plus installation and a tune is going to put me at the 1k mark, which I don't want to spend. As good as an eu is, I think that a safc2 will be the best option for me budget wise. However, if plans change and there is more room in the budget, I may just go with the eu.

How do you plan on tuning the SAFC without a wideband?

And adding tape on the MAF would advance the timing. It would work the same way as if you were pulling fuel with a SAFC.
