cam ?

So Im having some rev up cams put it with Stephen Max's cam adapters, and I got a call from the shop telling me the lobes on the 3.5 cams dont line up like the 3.0 cams. I thought using the cam adapters corrected them to sit in the 3.0 position?
Are they lining them up wrong or something? Here are some pics I have....

Anyone have any insight? Im really hoping there isnt an issue so that they can complete the work tomorrow morning.

are they putting the right adapters on the right cams?

intakes is adapter, exhaust is spacer i believe. somebody should confirm that tho.

the intake cam should have a drill mark

The spacers have nothing to do with how the lobes line up. The journals control where the lobes are positioned. The spacers only bring the timing chain in line on the 3.0.

I have a 3.0 in about 1000 pieces and some rev up cams at home. I can do a sanity check later but I'm pretty sure people put cams from the vq35 in the vq30 all the time.

Here are vq30de cams next to rev up cams. The bottom of the picture is the front of the engine. The lobes are in perfect alignment.

I suspect the guy at the shop was using bank 1 cams on bank 2 or vice versa. That will cause a lobe misalignment.

Here are the bank 1 rev up cams in a bank 1 vq30de head:

Looks good to me. Maybe one day this will be done. I'm working on cleaning the other head and valves now, then i'll do a little lapping to clean up the sets. I'm getting pretty close to putting it all together.

how do you tell bank 1 from bank 2? by comparing the alignment to the stock ones?

The length from the end of the cam to the first lobes.

Bank 1 is short.

Bank 2 is longer

shows bank 2 see how from the end to the first lobes is quite long, bank 1 is a lot shorter

thats alittle weird, im running them and the duration of them seems to have moved the lobes alittle bit compared to the normal 3.0 cams but they worked fine in my car. Ask him if he is sure its for the correct bank. They wont even fit if they are not in the correct bank.

Actually you might want to go stand and watch while those cams are being installed. Im dead sure they fit and work with out issue unless they are not rev-up cams.

The lobes on bank 1, cylinder 1 are suppose to face upward and towards each other and its the little hole on the cam is the one that face upward on the intake cams The arrows on the timing chain are suppose to point at the 2 blue links on the chain, And the gold like has to line up with the arrow on the crank's gear.

If they are making a mistake like that. They have already started but you might want to keep your eye on that.

I spoke to Stephen Max and he educated me on the cam spacers. He told me "he makes the adapters with a 4 degree advance angle compared to the VQ30 cams. The four degrees results in the same intake-exhaust valve overlap as the VQ30 setup. This is done because the exhaust valve opening and closing times are different between the VQ30 and the VQ35."

Im pretty sure their Rev Up cams, I bought them from another member here and they seemed to be a legit seller, they have the notches in the ends of them also....

When I spoke to them, they hadnt tried to install them. They were just comparing them to the OEM cams. I plan on stopping by tomorrow to see whats going on.
Sending you a PM Crusher.

So am I, but all in due time.
Once the build is complete I will need to have it tuned, then work on extending the rev limiter for a final tune. Hopefully it will all be said and done in a few more weeks.

Not mch to update.
Car is up and running, just finished breaking in the motor and new clutch, now Im gathering the funds to have it dyno tuned.
Once its up and running 100% I will post more.
Im not one to posts up and say " Hey,Im gonna do this and this and etc." and then later never follow through like some on here do. Thats why Id rather wait until everything is done and then post up.

Well like Ive stated I just gone done breaking in the motor and clutch so none of my revs have been above 3500 so I couldnt really tell you.
Plus without it being tuned Im not about to start beating on it.

Rebuilt the 3.0, nothing too extreme though.
Trying to schedule a tuning session now, hopefully my tuner will be available soon.
