Looking for engine...what will work?

I need a new engine, and want to know which years are compatible to drop in...From what I can find any vq35de that is setup for FWD will work. Is this right? Will anything from 2004 to 2008 fit...Also I have 6 SPD MT, will that make a difference? I've also found a place with a vq35de refurbished for $3900, problem is i have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to be ready with a 3 year/unlimited mile warranty. Is it worth it to wait or just find a used engine?

Dude whoever told you $3900 is trying to rob you. Just keep looking in the junk yards you'll find them cheaper than that.

Yes you can use any fwd 04-08 (02-08 in fact) VQ, but if it's an 08 (and possibly 07 too, I forget) from an Altima I believe you'll need a cam signal inverter (see SurraTT's thread re 09 to 02 swap in all motor). There may be minor differences re wire brackets/clips, connectors should be the same, might be a difference on the fuel line connection- minor stuff. If you have a 6 speed you either need an engine that was matched to a 6 speed(edit- to a manual), or if the motor was from an auto you'll need to swap the upper oil pan(and possibly lower, but may be identical) from your engine so the crank sensor is in the correct position. Re the rebuild, that price seems a bit high- I was quoted $3500 in Montreal, and US prices tend to be lower. I was able to find an 06 Altima motor with 50k miles for $1200 tax in(15% up here) delivered with a 6 month warranty that's running like a top. Look around, be patient, and if at all possible get your motor locally and check the VIN for the donor car- if the yard won't give you the VIN prior to purchase I'd walk.
