2J-Racing Side Exit Exhaust Installed
2J-Racing Side Exit Exhaust Installed
I've been mulling over a side exit exhaust off and on the past year. I pulled the trigger on Black Friday as 2J-Racing had their 3" B15 side exit exhaust on sale. Having only eyeballed pictures of it on their website and those that others have posted, I was anticipating that some modification would be required but should be close enough.
First and foremost, weight reduction. My A32 Cattman 3" catback w/o2 sensor weighed 39 lbs. The 2JR B15 side exit came in at 23 lbs. Unfortunately, I don't have a complete stock A32 catback to compare.
The only modifications needed to make it fit is to weld or bolt on a longer piece of steel to the included exhaust hanger, an o2 bung will need to be added. Lastly depending on personal preference, a new flange could be sandwiched between the rearmost joint, or you could take a BFH to the exhaust tunnel. YMMV if you still have the heat shields installed.
As it currently sits (with only the modified exhaust hanger) the exit pipe hangs roughly an inch below the pinch weld. The flange spacer and/or a BFH should allow the exit pipe to be tucked up more.
First impressions on sound, well its definitely louder than the Cattman 3". At a warm idle and maintaining speed is when its the quietest. Light acceleration reminds me of a super loud honda putting around town. WOT reminds me of a raspy G/Z with test pipes. I'll report back after I've put more miles on it.
I should be recording some video of it with a gopro soon. I have a start up vid, but the phone was too close to do much good.

So, it looks like I'm off the hook to weigh my exhaust...
Good job on this. Any consideration in cutting in back a few inches? My hunch says it might look a little better... and more weight savings.

Not quite, I would still like a second party to confirm the weight.
I think its just the angle of the dangle. It appears to stick out further because its hanging about an inch too low in addition to the angle that I took the pictures from. There is also the option of painting it black.

Ah if only this was legal at the events i attend... the exhaust staying pretty still for yah?
Im surprised 2j made this mod, they themselves cant use the mod on the sentra [to my knowledge, some one may come in and own me on this soon]

I like the racecar noises it makes at WOT though

Why can't they use it on the sentra?

I remember when i did a side exit on my car it sounded silly as **** lol, a local exhuast shop did it, cost $40, sold it with my y-pipe and headers for $200, winning. Mine looked better too so me>you

It drones a lot and it will get old so be prepared. Also i would get another flange, gasket, and longer bolts for the rear and space it out a little more because it will cause some very annoying vibration and banging noises when you push the car a little. It will cost you about $40 but it will be well worth it.

I forgot I have an extra 3" flange on my old y pipe, I'll grind that off and throw it on this weekend.
I haven't had any vibration or banging noises with the nearly solid hanger on the trailing arm.

Its f'kn loud. I have a bad ear that makes it a bit worse for me (it would otherwise be tolerable, well it its tolerable in my good ear at least), so I've just been wearing earplugs when I drive. But don't expect to be able to talk on the phone while you are accelerating.
