Are 2 subs alot better?

Right now in my 96 maxima, i have one JL 12 inch W3 running off a 250/1 JL amp. It sounds good, but i just want more bass. I was thinking about getting another JL 12 inch with another 250/1 amp, but it is gonna cost me some dough. In your opinions, are 2 subs that much better than one, and is it worthit?

What type of enclosure do you have? A bandpass box will probaly give you the satisfaction you want.

It really depends on what you want as far as frequency range, space taken up in your car, total power draw, and total budget you have to play with.

Just considering sound, most of the time if your aims are under competition level, your wish can be satisfied with one sub. However, depending on the equipment you already have, this might not be the easiest/cheapest way to go.

I think the main disadvantage with two subs is the space taken up by the enclosure(s). For this reason I prefer to go with the single sub setup, and also for the belief that in general, in my opinion, you can do better if you throw out say, $300-450 for a sub rather than two subs that would cost $100-150 a piece. But that's a general rule - there's definitely exceptions to that, so if you find a speaker mated with an enclosure size/style & amp that produces a sound you really like, it'd be best to just add to that rather than completely changing things (unless you take a listen to something at your local shop/another car and are even more impressed by it than your current sub).

Why don't you get a more powerful 12". Something like an Adire Audio Brahma 12" will destroy several lesser 12" cones in SPL and in SQ. Granted you'll need a nice Class D amp capable of dropping 1kW, but it's do-able.

The beauty of the Brahma is it's linearity. It sounds good with 100 watts, or over 1000. But like all speakers, in the wrong enclosure it might sound good for only a few seconds. Most who want SPL won't really like the brahma because it is so clean. SPL can be measured only with a meter. Several people have already had brahma's pushing over 130 DB's and complained that they could not hear the sub. This is because the component of distortion is so small. Many people believe that the distortion is actually part of their music and miss it when it is gone.

I'm well aware of the beauty of the XBL2 technology. It is a good thing. It would be far louder (with enough) power than 2 12W3's. As far as people not thinking it's loud enough because the distortion missing those people are nuts. They're probably so used to hearing harmonics in their bass they don't know what they should be hearing. Personally, I like my bass balanced and clean. I have no need for a Brahma in my car. My 12" Infinity Perfect gets the job done.

i can vouch for this...

i sat in an s10 with 2 brahma 15's tuned to 30 hz...from the comp my friend went to with it, he hit ~123 in dbsospl (drive by shoot-out spl). the mic sits 6 feet from the car, pointed at the passenger window. you have to have the passenger window down, and cruise by slowly plaing music, so tones wont help ya. he took first in his class, even against a car with 4 12's in it!

If you really want to get more bass, sell the enclosure you have with the 250/1 JL Amp and get a custom enclosure for 2 or possibly 3 JL 12 W3's and a 500/1 JL amp but if you go with three 12w3's then you might want to wait a month or so and get JL's new 1000/1 amp that is coming out, I just got a custom enclosure for 3 12w0's and a JL 500/1 amp with a cap and 4 guage wiring.
