Make sure it fits the specifications of the subwoofer, and make sure it is made of MDF (medium density fiberboard). You dont want particle board.

No, but mdf is much stronger, and stiffer, also heavier. MDF is basically sawdust glued together, it doesn't ahve the same consistency as particle board. Goto home depot and look at mdf and particle board, ull see the difference.. try speakerhole.com for some boxes at pretty cheap prices.

Sealed...

Sealed= nice attack and decay, very punchy, more natural.

B.P.= boomy sound, very sloppy.

what do you mean meet the specs of the subwoofer? Meaning like size of the actual horn and amount of space it needs depth-wise?

Each subwoofer is designed different for different needs. You need to use the thiele small parameteres that come with a subwoofer in order to calculate the optimum box for your subwoofer. Some subs require large boxes, some require small. The size of your box will affect alot, power handling, how it sounds, etc. Find a sub, and goto caraudioforum.com and post some messages.

Bandpass can sound good, even very good. It's a matter of building the box right for the sub you have. It's difficult to tune a bandpass box, and they are generally large if they have a medium or large sub. But skeelo was correct when he/she advised that the attack is not as good with a bandpass box. Typically a sealed box will also have a lower cut off frequency. As far as which is easier to build and get good sound out of, definitely sealed. But for SPL a bandpass or vented box is definitely the way to go.
