Installed 500/1 tonight...anyone want to help me troubleshoot?

OK, I ended up mounting the 500/1 flat on the rear passenger side of the trunk, in the corner. Not the best spot, but I'm function over form, and don't carry much at all in the trunk.

I tuned the settings approximately before mounting. I did have to relocate my ground to the other side of the spare tire well, and sanded the area down/bolted the eye connector down tightly. Afterwards, I hooked up all the wiring at the amp very tightly. I was wondering if you're just running one speaker, can you use either sets of speaker terminals with them being wired in parallel inside the amp? It seemed no matter which terminals I used here, which filters I turned on/off, and which input settings I chose (high, low, moving the input sensitivity up and down on each), when the bass bumped on the sub even at fairly quiet volumes, the sub made a metallic rattling, heard inside the box. Tried reversing phase, even...same deal.

Nothing on the face of the sub is loose, nor is any air coming out anywhere on the enclosure. The sub worked fine for the week I had my ESX Q1752 powering it, before a fuse blew (from a slightly loose connection at the fuseholder, I'm thinking). However, when I tried to get it back into operation, I never could correctly...I cut down the power/ground wires more to fit the 8ga terminals of the ESX more tightly. When I'd turn the car on, the power led and bridging led would light up, but when I'd connect my sub, both lights would dim and the sub wouldn't receive any power. I attributed this to cutting down the wires too much.

Now with the 500/1 taking 4ga, everything is snug, tight, with no wire exposed anywhere. Anyone have any ideas? Something wrong with my sub? It can't be the new 500/1....

One more thing worth noting is when working on the wiring after the fuse blew in the ESX, the power wire dangled down and touched a bolt on my license plate for a second, causing a quick spark. It was about the duration of the spark that occurs when you plug a power wire into an amp that's live with the ground wire already connected. I had cut off that portion of the wire since and the wire itself at the end looks fine.

Thanks for reading the long msg, and for any advice.

It could pssibly be the tinsel leads on the speaker hitting the cone or spider. Take a look and see if that's it. If it appears ok, try a different woofer. I think you'll find the problem in the woofer.

I have the same problem with one of my subs. So i'm guessing the sub is responsible since 1 does it, and the other is quiet. what are tinsel leads?

The tinsel leads are connected to the backside of the cone and go to your speaker terminals. Take a speaker out and turn it upside down. You should see the leads inside the basket. Move the speaker cone from one extreme to the other and see if the leads might hit something.

I stopped by the shop over the weekend. The leads were coming into contact with the basket. They replaced the sub (w/a factory repaired one) out of warranty, that's a new revision of the sub w/better designed leads.

Sounds nice now. Thanks for the suggestion

Why don't you redo the leads yourself? You'll probably end up saving time and money.

Well start off by removing the sub from the box, and inspecting for contact. Then repair accordingly. I highly suggest you take pics, and provide if you are not sure of the repair.
