Xtant

I read some where that Xtant amplifiers are no longer good or as good because they got acquired by MTX. Is this true? What about PPI I heard they aren't a good brand anymore as wellas for SoundStream. So then what are the good brands out there?

Well, just my opinion, but I never thought Xtant's were any good in the first place. MTX has always made some pretty good high power amps for cheap, but were never anywhere in the clarity/reference arena. PPI competition class stuff has always been there in terms of SPL. Back in the day, PPI comp class stuff was always stuff to be reckoned with. But ever since they went bankrupt, they've run into a lot of problems. They still make decent stuff, but PPI is known for having a higher than average warranty claim rate (basically PPI stuff is known for failing within the warranty period), mostly because of overrating some of their stuff. As for Soundstream, the biggest reason why they are losing their good reputation is because they haven't come out with anything new for a while. All their amps are atleast a couple years old. Just my opinion, but if you want hard core bass, go PPI comp class, old stuff. Just prepare to have problems with warranty claims. If you want clarity/reference, SQL, go Alpine, Soundstream, McIntosh. As for the sub amps, go RF, JL.

im not sure i agree with everything there...you really shouldnt be able to hear a difference in amps. also, the xtant and jl amps were both the brainchild of bruce macmillian (sp?), and the xtant amps are usually regarded very well as far as reliability, and performance. ive played with a few of them, and was almost convinced to get some of them, but they didnt have the configurations i needed.

I concur, I've always thought of Xtant as one of the top of line. I was going to go with them, but I would have to purchase a seperate x-over module. I went with PPI PC450 and PC250 instead. I'll probably stick with PPI when I upgrade as well.

Yup 4 zero zero 4. The X series were actually 3 digits...X603, and X604.

But either way it is A4004...4X100W...$385

--Retail $549
--MAP $499

The xtant A series amps are crap. I had my A3001 serviced twice in 1 year. It was powering only one JL 12w3. I'm speaking from experience so please don't flame me.
