I am going to upgrade my wires under my hood for my battery and alternator so i can actually get the full output of my amp without killing my alternator. JBLBP1200. Right now i'm running it at 4 ohms getting 600 watts and there is very slight dimming. but when try to run it at 2 or 1 ohm its really bad and the alternator will not be able to take it and its really annoying. I heard the best and most effective thing is to upgrade all my wiring and check all my grounds. Well i looked and i see one of the grounds is next to the battery and then annother wire goes to under the engine. Is the one to the engine for it or the alternator or is it just a second ground for the battery. Also does anyone know how to loosen the ground next to the battery. Thats where i wanna ground it at andi dont know how.

 

you might wanna do a search for "hyperground or hypergrounding". anyways, if you're killing your alternator, maybe look into a "cap" or "capacitor". Or just upgrade your alternator and battery.

Hyperground is a good way to spend $120 on $20 worth of wire. Or you could go to a welding shop and pay less than $20. The ground bolt next to the battery is a standard 8mm diameter threaded bolt. Probably has a 12-14 mm head. I can't remember for sure. The cable going form there to the block is where your chassis is grounded to the engine. The engine is grounded to the alternator by direct contact. I replaced both wires in my car. It's very simple and straight forward. But with these big amps we use I see more and more recommendations to run a ground cable from the battery as well as a power cable. But for just the one little JBL amp, that should not be needed. A cap may be a benefit. But look into some of the newer versions of caps and other power regulation devices currently available that didn't exist a few years ago.

 

I already have the wire. i have some 2 gauge battery cable. I'm going to do it myself thats why i wanted to make sure i knew exactly what i was doing.

 

My local HomeBase (hardware store) has 0 ga copper wire for running electricity into houses. I dunno how good they will be for hypergrounding, but should work ok. A big diff between that and a real hyperground kit is the hyperground kit will be more flexible and easier to work with.
I should be receiving my hyperground kit from Kevin in a few days for my 93 max se 5sp. I'll let u know how it goes.
Also, I also favor the idea of running a ground from battery to amp. It's more wire to run, but it's a good idea. U dunno how thick the wire needs to be, but I'd say 10ga should be fine for ground.
