Question on CUSTOM boxes...

i'm planning on buying another 12" sub but i'm worried two 12" subs will not fit in the far back of the trunk. I measured it to a degree and it seems to be 14" high and 30 inches in length horizontally. Every box i saw on net was too big to fit here so one of my friends may build one for me but i want to make sure that making box smaller won't hurt performance.

I guess we're talking 24 inches atleast from subs so 30 inches should be a nice tight fit. Does anyone have 2 12's fitting touching the back seat of trunk?

yea but yours is like heavily customed. You have like a whole wall making it look real neat. Looks good but i was interrested in jsut the box by itself just fitting in that tight area back there.

If i remember correctly, yours is like a wall right? its not really a box....

Eh, the wall is just cosmetic. There is an enclosure behind it.

If you have a sub that will work in 1.1 cubic feet gross volume you can still have access through the ski hole.

I have 2 12" JL Audio W3 subs in a box and it fits fine in that area. Ask Don about it though because he built my box!

That's true -- Work, School, Weddings, etc.

Now I'm going to start throwing college visits into the mix which should eat up some of the time. I'm also going on a school trip in November for 4 days. School is Monday-Friday, and it's pretty hard for me to get Saturdays off from work, so I'm gonna have to take a Sunday off and then spend the whole day there.

I would like to finish it before it gets cold and I'm sure you would too! Oh well! We'll finish it soon hopefully.

Try to stay away from Ebay for stuff like that. If any problems arise, you wont be covered for a warranty. I may be able to help you out, email me for some pricing.

i just measured the trunk space on my 97 SE that i would like to take up and its 29 inches horizontally, a maximum of 14.5 to 15 inches high and another 14 to 18 inches thick.

I seem to remember it being wider. Especially if you lob off the rear lower corners for the shock towers to clear. But you still have to be able to get it into the trunk.

And exactly why a pair of encolsures is easier. Not to mention about half as heavy each. A dual 12 box the way I make boxes would weight 50-80 lbs if small. And that is the empty weight. Add a couple of 25-55 lb subs and you start understanding why two enclosures could save you some hassle.

What brand and model number for the sub? If I have the parameters in WINISD or if they are easilly attainable I can come up with a couple different enclosure recommendations fairly quickly for a sealed enclosure.

Sorry, my computer forgot it's IP address. Took me till now to get it reconfigured. Now I still have to look up the specs for your kenwood sub. I already found that it is no longer listed in the current product section.

I have 2 12's in a pretty small sealed box and its not hitting as hard as my friends bigger ported box

why is this?

I thought slealed boxes are better then ported boxes and it didn't really matter the size

Also in the trunk of my maxima I didn't really have any foundation except a thick piece of cardboard above the spare tire
I had to drill pieces of wood into the steel frame for a solid foundation

they should be very similar to the ones that are out right now. They have the same rms, ohms and size (12") as last years, but theyre grey now, not blue.

Sorry, my computer keeps ph@c&ing up. But regardless of how similar the specs are, the enclosures could be totally different. There is a lot to how the speakers motor system generates sound.

Okay, the Kenwood archive of manuals requires that I have the model number. If you don't know the model, read it off of the speaker.

A small sealed box will hit the midbass probably down to 40-50 Hz pretty well. Below that point it drops off @ 12 db per octave. And a ported box built anywhere close to a recommended fequency will out pound a sealed box any day of the week. But below the tuning frequency the SQ and output drops off more quickly than a sealed box, 24 db per octave. Also, it's real easy to blow a sub in a ported box if you play at high volume below tuning.

Drilling mounting holes was a good idea.

my friends system with his ported box is way louder, compared to my subs and amp and its like 200 watts more then him he has the MA Audio 1000 watt amp with the 12 IL subs and I have the 1200 watt amp with the 12 XL subs but in his truck it hits so much harder. As soon as I I close my trunk the hood rattles like crazy and you can't hear any bass on the outside what do you guys think I should do

in the inside it sounds awesome but I think I blew my rear back right speaker it rattles like crazy and sounds like crap

i've seen and heard of bigger boxes getting into the trunk so my mini 29 X 14.5 X 14.5 shouldn't have a problem getting in.

First you need to decide it you want it to sound good on the inside, or loud on the outside. Because of the drastically different designs that will be needed. Have you tried opening the ski hole? Alos, it sounds as though at least one of the rear speakers is blown. I would remove it. But if you have 1 blown speaker then you have likely been playing it at levels well above ditrotion for a while now. Learn the differences between clean and loud, and distortion.

Sorry, I can't help you get it louder outside the car. That's one of the things I try my best to avoid. And the ski hole is the armrest. It sounds like a lot of your sound is getting trapped in the trunk. I would remove the rear speakers and leave the holes open. Or try to vent into the cabin some other way. It's hard to believe that two twelves aren't rattling your house windows.
