Aftermarket speakers

I'm planning on replacing my tweeters only (have to start someplace) on my 2002 Bose equipped car. Some of the tweeter sets include crossovers and others do not.
1. What exactly does the crossover do?
2. Is it needed since I plan on keeping my stock HU? I have the Navi system so I don't have a need or the HU problems of other owners.
3. Finally where is a good location to place the crossover if I go that route?

TIA

1. A crossover filters different frequencies of the audio signal to different speakers depending on the speakers function. For example, low frequencies to your subwoofer, medium to your drivers, and high to the tweeters. Doing this helps to prevent damaging the speakers by sending too much bass to a speaker that can't handle it (as well as audio clarity)

2. I'm not sure, based on the stock setup, but it won't hurt to have a crossover. A 5th gen guy can help.

3. In the third gens, there is some nice room under the glove compartment.

A note: I would really consider replacing the front speakers and tweeters as a set. These are called component speakers. Go to crutchfield to find out what size you need. I really like MB Quart premium series, but that is a personal preference. By the way, if you can do the install your self, try it, because most audio shops do really poor quality work, IMHO.
