You will need a really long port in a 1/2 cubic foot enclosure to tune low. The port volume may be significant enough to make the 1/2 cubic foot ported box larger than the 1 cubic foot sealed. I don't know if the port will be enough to compensate for the less efficient smaller box.

The overall diffence in box size between a 1/2 cubic foot sealed and a 1 cubic foot sealed is very little. Unless you use thinner wall materials, you will use more than half as much wood. So it won't be half as large a box, more like 60-80 % as large. Going ported may mean the overall box volume will be greater than the 1 cubic foot sealed. Oops, I said that twice.

Firstly, a ported box usually needs to be larger than a sealed box for the same sub. The reason is as stated above, for a small ported box, you would need a really long port. I don't think you could fit a large enough port in a box that small. If you absolutely have to use a box that small, I would build a sealed box and then fill it with accoustic type filling to make it seem larger. Other options include getting subs that are designed for small box applications (IDQ etc.)
