Optima yellow top? red top? or will a regular battery be enough?
Optima yellow top? red top? or will a regular battery be enough?
Bear with me guys..
From searching, I found that red top is generally good for cold climates? yellow tops are better for using power with the car off..
My current battery (not sure what it is) is giving me problems, it is cold up here now so i need a replacement before it leaves me stranded in the middle of nowhere..
I am also waiting to put in my stereo.. so i figured that i should get something good instead of the typical diehard etc.. 40-60$ batteries.
I will not be pushing that much power, nor do i play the stereo with the car off that much...
Is the red top much better than the average battery? Will it be enough to support an aftermarket stereo?
Also,
what is a good deal for a red top or a yellow top?
only place i've found them right now (didn't really look much) is Pepboys.. and the local Pepboys doesn't have yellow tops right now, which cost 160$ there.. red tops are like 110$ i think..
Is the extra $ worth the price?
Can I get by just with a plain 60$ battery??????
I don't want to spend 160$ on a battery if I don't have to
thanks

on the diehard.. it cut out and u could see the headlights dim everytime the bass hit hard.. but now with the yellow top the dimming has gone away so im quite happy

I went to Costco, they told me they don't carry Optimas?
They had some other brand on the shelves, forgot which but it was like 40$ a battery.. another question...
How long should a Yellow top last me???
If it will have twice the life of a regular battery, then it's more than worth it already.. I'll follow max.n.outs advice
other electrical things I can think about that migth add extra power strain in my car besides the stereo is HIDs and interior neons.. ? I won't be putting in anything else..
don't waste your time and $ with a Yellow top. you won't ever use 35% of it's benefits on a car like that. just a waste of hard-earned $, IMO.
Look at Interstate's Megatron series of batteries. I've had one in my car running for close to 4 years, always running a 1000W+ system. current one is about 2500W, and I ran that battery for a month or so on that system. no problems.
it'd still crank over like it was brand new even after sitting for a week at near 0 temps.

The HIDs are supposed to be less wattage than the regular headlights and the neons pull next to nothing. I've got 3 - 20" tubes and 2 - 9" mini tubes running on a 2AMP fuse.

Where do they sell Interstate Megatron's?
Also, what kind of price am I looking at? so I don't get ripped off if I find it....
thanks!

ok.. even more reasons why I might be fine with a regular battery.
There is a lot of confusion about optimas..
Red Top: Starter only, any accessory load (Stereo) will void warranty.
Yellow Top: Deep cycle, can be used as a starter. Best for car audio.
Orange Top: Same as red, but with terminals reversed.
Blue Top: same as Yellow, with auxiliary screw terminals.
Don't hesitate to use a yellow as a starter, I tested mine on a load tester to over 1000 CA (that's as high as the scale read, it buried the needle
).. plenty of power..
