Opinions on JL Audio HO sub boxes

Does anyone have any opinions on the JL Audio High Output series of sub boxes? Specifically, will the one with a single W7 hit has hard as the one with 2 W3s? I'm not sure what will fit in my trunk but the HO Box with the two W3s wouldn't fit in my buddy's Accord. We tried and tried

Thanks!

I have never heard the box but a W7 is capable of more than twice the linear excursion of a W3.

How does that translate into volume and pounding? These "mega subs" look so weird to me. The rubber sourround looks like the one on my trunk

My amp is a 500/1 so the place said that I could *probably* drive the single W7 only because the HO box is ported. He said I would not have not chance with a sealed....I would need a 1000/1.

I wonder, with that amp is one W7 gonna out perform two W3s?

Thanks..

The volume of air a sub can move determines output. X-max times surface area times two. Or two way excursion times surface area. A 500 watt amp could push it to it's limit if the box were large enough. But the suspension on that sub is so tight you might need to mount it infinite baffle with 500 watts. And then get an infrasonic filter to cut off the low end. The JL amp has a built in infrasonic filter.

If a 500 watt amp can push a sub to it's excursion limit in a ported box I would definitely not get a bigger amp. It means the box is tuned to a high frequency. Probably sound great with rap and R&B. But on low bass it could unload the driver. That's what happens when you try to play frequencies below the tuneing frequency with a ported box. The Sub cone has almost no resistance provided by the box and it can go beyond X-max. A properly tuned ported box can handle as much or more power than a sealed box.

So I'm guessing that the 2 W3s are gonna be louder than the 1 W7, just not as deep?

I don't know if you are talking about 10W3's or 10W3 V2's. If the old W3's then they would probably be similar in output. But te W7 will still be clean at full power. The W3 will not. If you have the W3's then a pair should have greater maximum output than a single 10W7. But there is a lot of other stuff to consider as well. I you are just looking for SPL, get some kicker L7's.

Alright man, the W7 will pound the crap out of the two W3's, and sorry to say you'd need probably another 500 watt amp to efficently run that set up, or just get a new JL 1000/1 that should do the job nice for one 12W7. I plan on either getting 2 or 3 12w7's, making a custom fiberglass back shelf and using either 3 or 4 JL 1000/1 or 3 or 4 MTX 81000D amps.

I'm thinking that I might be underpowering it as well. The W7 HO box will take 750 watts continuous, the double W3 (version 2) HO box will take 500 watts - a good match for my amp. Only problem is that box is so f'in big I don't know if it will fit in my 5th gen. I'm gonna see if my place has it tomorrow to see if it will fit.

BTW, your system is gonna be NUTS!

Like I said before, in the right sized box it will reach Xmax with 500 watts. Just make the correct box. Also, just because it can take 750 watts is no reason to pay for that much power. You may never turn it up enough to use 100 of those watts. In car spl for the 13W7 can be in the 100 dB range with 1 watt of amp power. That's loud enough to cause hearing damage. And you also have the option of a ported box. But it still sounds like you are mostly interested in SPL. I wonder why you are wasting your money on the W7 for SPL. Any sub can get loud. There is no point in haveing it clean at 140 dB's because you won't be able to hear tomorrow if you turn it up like that today.

For one you don't want to have a system for a daily driver car that will hit over 160 dB or even 150 dB cause it's really not safe to be in a car that is hitting that hard, I would suggest that if you want to be loud and heard go with one W7 or the two W3's, I personally am going to make two custom removeable fiberglass enclosures, one with two or three W7's and the other one with two W3v2's maybe three of em.

I went to the stereo place today and the HO box with the 12" W7 wouldn't fit. The HO with the 2 - 12" W3s was a no go as well . My only other option was to get the HO Box with a 10" W7 but that one is $550! I didn't get a chance to listen to it (the woofer was damaged) but all the better. I currenly have an older JL Audio bandpass box that I love and fits well in the trunk but one of the woofers is on the fritz (bass comes and goes). I've decided to go the cheap route and put 2 new W3v2s in my current box and deal with that. That option is going to cost me about $300 and will increase the input capability to 500 watts.

I'm not one of those people who are just looking for SPL, but I want my 500/1 amp to be used to the fullest, otherwise I should have gone with a 250/1. Thanks for all the input.
