What kind of wood for building a flase floor?

I heard Birch is strong and light. So is it Birch plywood? Birch partical board? Birh hardwood? I was walking around Homedepot and the selections weren't the greatest. I did see some 3/4 MDF but those suckers are heavy. I want something 1/4" that's light and stiff.

MDF is the typical standard of what to use, you can also get it in ultra light MDF which is also very nice.

I used regular plywood. It is much lighter than MDF and particle board. Held up well too after I cut it. I sealed it and it was good to go. Now I am in the process of making an "under-box" that will fit in the wheel well.
