I'm gonna be building a custom sub box in 2 weeks and i wanna make sure i do it right. I've heard that you need to know exactly how much air a sub needs to make it hit correctly and i was wondering if anyone knows where to get that info? I've got a pair of kenwoods and i'd have to look up the model number, but if anyone knows of a site that has that kinda info that would be helpful. Also is it really that important to have the right size box? since they do push air OUT not in? Cause i may change subs sometime and i don't want to have to build a new box.

Yes, it is important. In many instances, the box is more important than the speaker. I have seen crappy speakers that sound friggin amazing when put in an appropriate box. At the same time, I have seen some of the best subs mounted in an improper box and it sound like heaping piles of steaming ****.

The size of the box does matter, but if you change out your sub in the future, it most likely won't be affected that much. In general for say, a 12" sub, you should use a 1.0-1.2 cuft. sealed enclosure. The slight differences in tenths of cuft will make the SPL and SQ vary slightly.

As mentioned before, yes it is very very important that you find out exactly how much space is required for your specific sub. Also, most manufacturers give the net internal space required, which does not include the actual sub basket displacement. Many manufacturers also give a space in which the subwoofer does not have the flattest curve, but one which requires the least amount of space. You should try using a program like Win ISD to help you create your enclosure, such that you will get the most desireable output.
