Building false floor
Building false floor
I'm building a false floor in my 99 maxima. Does anyone have any tips about getting the floor to fit flush and how to actually get the floor into the trunk. Seems like it's not possible to fit one piece of wood all the way into the trunk without cutting it into a few pieces, but I've heard cutting the floor into a few pieces is welcoming rattles. I have a box that is 26" wide, 8" deep and 15" tall that will be fitting in the rear of the trunk (close to rear seat). Any suggestions or perhaps links to building a false floor would be appreciated. I'm also going to, obviously, be carpeting the floor and putting plexiglass windows in to view my amps with to any tips on that would be appreciated as well.
Thanks
Mike
Thanks
Mike
THe big problem with making one large false floor is fitting it in through the trunk opining it's self. Make a template out of cardboard and see what will fit, you may have to do two pieces but it's not a big deal...Just cut out around the rack, if the rack sits up a little bit from floor level, then just use some wood mounted to the cars floor to raise it up then attach the false floor to that.

Good Luck!!! .....DMAN
Where did you guys buy carpet for your custom floor and what color was it? I'm thinking I have to redo my floor ... I did a quick and messy job (took about 1 hour to measure and cut out 3 pieces). Mine's all crooked and stuff. Also, what type of wood and thickness did you use?

1) is the center "box" with the amps in it removable? Do you have extra slack on the wire so it can be moved to get at the spare?
2) What type of wood and carpet did you use?
3) Is there a "frame" to hold up the false floor running all over the perimeter of the trunk? How high is it?
Thanks.
Re: False floor
spta97 the answers to your questions are:
1) the center box is removable, the spare is easily accesseble and I built the amp rack frame so you can just remove the bottom portion if you drill too many holes in the amp rack or if you change amps with different placement of wire holes.
2)I used 2 1/2" X 1/2" wood for the perimeter of the amp rack and everywhere else to raise the floor and 1/4" thick, it's not ply wood but it's not particle board it's some kind of fiberboard. for the carpet it's just regular speaker box carpet.
3)Don't really call it a frame but it only measures a little under three inches.
Hope that answers your questions. I am making a new sub box for my new type R sub but I don't think it will be till this summer. If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.

i'm in the process of building my false floor, been sidetracked with the damn weather ...
anyways, avoid a 1 piece floor. i made one to go with my stealth box and it was the biggest, most annoying, most frustrating, pain in the a$$ to do. its possible, but the time and effort is just not worth it. i was about 2 tantrums away from slicing it in 2, but then a miracle happened and it fit
it is really really hard to fit something the width of the trunk floor thru the trunk opening. like max n out said do a template out of cardboard and see if you can get it into the trunk without bending it. in fact, even easier is to take out your trunk liner (the bottom carpet/rug) and see if you can get it in and out without bending it. if you can (i couldnt, but anything is possible when you are not ****ed off) then you should be able to do a 1 piece.
if you have time and patience, then i say try a 1 piece, if not, then do it in multiple pieces
good luck

@ mretrum...
If you plan to do this yourself, make sure you do a lot of measuring and re-measuring before you get started. I built mine (check my website for pics) and it was a tough job, but it looks pretty decent. If you want to get carpet, try an audio installation shop that builds their own boxes/enclosures for subs - they normally have that stuff on huge rolls and you can usually buy a couple of yards of carpet from them pretty reasonable (I only spent about $15 for my carpet).
I used 5/8" MDF (if I remember correctly). I padded the parts that would contact the metal in the trunk with some thick packing material that came with some audio equipment that I ordered, and I haven't heard a rattle yet (knock on wood).
I don't know if you're using a pre-made subwoofer enclosure, but before you put everything together, take into consideration the angle that the back seat creates when you try to fit everything - that's one of the mistakes that I made.
Believe me, it was a tough job (I don't know if I'd do it again) but it's very satisfying to hear the compliments that I get on my system and knowing that I did it myself and all it took was a bit of planning and some elbow grease, but it came out good and I didn't have to spend too much for what I got. Customer satisfaction is the key - if you're satisfied, that's all that matters! Good luck!!!
