It will require some creative wire splicing if not amped but is definetly doable...just install the stock one and splice the Pioneer into the stock wiring...grantred if you plan to amp out the CD, then the wires AT THE SPEAKERS will have to be connected to the stock harness for the stock deck to play unamped and the leads connected to the speaker outputs on the amp for the CD

There will be two extremely different sound systems, and it will sound strange. One system will have to be shut off while the other is playing, or you my screw up the speakers, as well as the electrical system. However, I see your problem. The DEH-3400 is an AM/FM/CD player, you need a Pioneer CDS-P4000. It is a in-dash CD (alone) player.

CDS-P4000
Single CD Player
MSRP: $250

From www.pioneerelectronics.com :

CD is the best thing to happen to cars since steering wheels. Add this component CD player onto a Pioneer system with either IP-Bus control or a Visual Audio master unit, and you are in the driver's seat, musically speaking. A multi-color LED display lights the way. And, it also plays CD-R's and CD-RW's.

DIN Fixed Component CD Player with Multicolor LED Display
13-Band Spectrum Analyzer Add-on for use with IP-Bus Headunits and Visual Audio Master units.

This is probally is what you are looking for, or switch to a FM Modulated 6/10/20 CD changer.....

i'm trying to AVOID buying a new radio....hence the idea of rigging the stock tape deck (which would then allow me to listen to my mp3 player through the tape deck) the cd player doesn't have any aux inputs on it

4 standard automotive relays, one for each speaker output, and a switch to change between the units.. you'll have to pick one to plug the antenna into for the tuner, unless you get an antenna splitter..

really not all that difficult, but kinda ghetto.

If you're only looking to play your mp3 player, why don't you just buy an add on auxiliary input and use the headphone mini plug to RCA Cable to connect it. Aux input is far more versatile and probably will be more reliable than that tape deck.

oh voy

I guess I should just buy a real radio and give the one I have to my mom

you can also use niles flashers that will send the signal through IR to another unit hidden or placed somewhere else.
