Transmission Line Enclosure

Has anybody here ever built a transmission line enclosure for their Max? I was thinking about trying to build one for a Diamond Audio CM3 12, and was curious to see if anyone else had ever tried this. Anybody got any tips before I try this?

Do lots of research and mathematical modeling before you actually build it. The length of the line, the taper of the line, and the amount of stuffing that you use all have a huge impact on the design. You should probably get some books like:

"Quick & Easy Transmission Line Speaker Design" booklet by designer, Larry D. Sharp and available from Old Colony Sound Lab.

I am not sure what effect the car would have on this design, though. Sounds like a pretty cool project, let us know how it works out.

I think one general rule is to make the line 1/4 the tuning frequencies wavelength. That is why it is to big to fit in the car, and still use the car for normal use. That combined with the fact that almost no one thinks T-lines sound any better than sealed enclosures. And the difficulty of tuning can have them sounding far worse.

The reason that I wanted to try it is that not many people have a setup like it. I met one guy who built one, (he showed me the pictures of the box as he was building it) and it sounded prety good. I thought that worst case, I could just scrap the box and build a simple sealed box. Just thought it would be a fun project, and add a little personal flair to my Max.

It's entirely up to you if you want the hassle of installing and tuning a TL in your car.
