speed sensor error - check engine light

Hi! Hoping someone can help here. The check engine light is on, and the error codes point to a fault in the speed sensor ('97 SE). Local dealership says that I can get a speed sensor for $28, but they also say that the speedometer must be replaced as well. Total cost of $350. I don't understand why, and they're not the most reputable dealership around. My questions: Is this a common problem? What is involved in replacing the speed sensor? Is there truly a problem with the speedometer as well? Thanks for any input!:

Does your needle work for your speedometer?

I haven't seen any problems whatsoever with the speedometer operation or accuracy.

Apparently my speed sensor is out, but my speedometer works absolutely fine. Maybe a speed sensor swap will do it for me? What is involved in changing out just the speed sensor?

take off the air cleaner box its on the transmission in the back towards the middle of the car. Its only held on by one bolt and plugged in. Its a dealer only part but is only 23.15 plus tax, roughly 28 bucks.
