Sub Started Smoking...!

I have a Rockford 8 g wiring kit...
I have 2 12" Audiobahn Excursion 400w subs...
I have a Lightning Audio 2Ch. 300w amp (i know, it sucks)

HERE is the dillema

MoDiddy has a JBL 1200x1 at 2 ohms Amp
MoDiddy has an Audiobahn Flame Q - 1200w RMS

I hooked up his amp and sub to my wiring kit (cuz his wiring kit is yet to be installed). The Flame was BUMPIN like I've never seen. SO loud. Then...we smell some stinch and turn off the music. Then we see a little smoke, we push on the cone...PFFFF all this smoke comes out. I opened the back from the terminal and the box was filled w/ smoke...WTF?? Burnt wire?

What the hell could it be??

Yeah sounds like a burnt voice coil....that jbl amp raped that audiobhan...once again audiobhan cannot handle its rated power...a lot of people have problems with these subs. If it says 1200wrms, give it 600..it is like they rate on their peak as their rms...I was gonna go with audiobhan years back, but many cautioned me to stay away. Whiles some have had luck with pushing the rated power to their subs, I have heard many other horror stories. What is the voice coil configeration of that sub? and what was the final load to the amp?

that means its time to rip out the cone and plant a tree in the basket.

seriously, try to send it in for a free replacement (if you got it from an authorized dealer), and tell them that you were pushing the 1200wrms that the sub said it could take. I am damn sure however that it wasnt even getting no where near that 1200 wrms, because you were using the 8 guage RF wiring kit, which means it probably had a 40-60 amp fuse, that would have blown way before you reached 1200wrms.

dang - heh, I've never heard of burning the VC. I guess it is possible though.

MoDiddy...better get in touch w/ whoever you bought it from. OR whenever you get a chance call me and I'll come over to take a look at it.

So do you guys think the sub will still work? I think we caught the smell pretty quickly IMO

If it was installed in the wrong box for 1200 watts, it's user error. Even so most companies will honor the warranty to keep a customer.

What kind of box should it be in? I believe it is in a 1.25 cu. ft box

Sorry, I have never even looked at an audioburn sub. I don't have any idea what enclosures they recommend.

the site has somewhere on there on recommendations for each sub, i forget where though. that's definitely a burnt voice coil. i'm also guessing the smoke smelled awful too, right? yeah, just take it back and get another one. most shops are pretty good about replacing stuff without a lot of drama.
