2 BOSE stereo replacement options

I have a 97 SE and the BOSE system is WONDERUFL. Unfortunately, the CD player spins up a cd, goes click a few times, and then repeats. After a little while it says "CD Err". It'd be cheaper just to buy a used one off eBay, so thats what I'm going to do (I don't want to go aftermarket w/any of the stereo right now).

My question is which BOSE HeadUnit is better for the 4th gens? I know they made 2 (I have the older one with all the side mounted buttons for power, tape,cd, etc). The newer one is compatible, but I like the looks of the older one a little more. Is there any internal differences of quality or anything else I should be aware of? I want to purchase the "better" of the two.
Thanks!

I believe the only difference is how it looks

YOu also have to consider that it is likely that an older unit will have been used more, thus making it more prone to the problem that yuo have. Newer units are more likely to have lower useage time, thius giving them a greater remaining lifespan.

I have the stock cd/tape bose deck from a 99se, was taken out at 28,000 miles. Worked perfect before i went to an alpine deck. If your interested, I'll sell it to ya for 30 + shipping.

actually... there are 3 diffrent bose double din decks for the 4th gen maxima. there was a special one manufactured for the 99/99-L cars. like previously stated, there are no diffrences other then the looks of the decks, and the usage on the decks. happy shopping.

Is yours a Bose or non-bose? He needs a Bose. If it is a non-bose, please PM or email me.

haha, you're better off just replacing everything and going aftermarket...Bose isn't worth it IMO...

I disagree

I think the BOSE stereo sounds very good. If I want to spend lots of money then I'll upgrade to a nice aftermarket and gut the bose, but I dont. The bose sounds better than the average stock stereo. Period.

True. For 99% of listeners, it is MORE than enough. For me, it is good for most of my listening (talk radio during commutes. When I am on the way to the gym, driving back roads, or out for fun, it is not enough. Personal preference, but it is not enough.

Recent Bose Replacement

I gotta jump in here. I just replaced my 99 SE-L stock Bose unit with a Bose unit from a 96. I was told that the only differences between the 2 were strictly cosmetic (my old 99 unit had the digital bass/treble/balance/fader control; the 96 controls are all dial), but I have to disagree. IMO opinion, the sound is MUCH better with the 96 unit than with my old one. The bass is by far the most noticable difference. And I personally like the looks of the 96 as well. I can post pictures noting the differences. I know that the sound could be far better with a complete sound system re-do. But for me and my uses, the Bose unit is just fine.

considering it is a 900 dollar option.. 30 bux is a steal.. my bose started doing that CR-ERR bs code and freezes up.. fortunatelly i have the extended warranty on it for 7 yr, 70k miles which also covers the radio..once it finally goes i will visit my friendly dealer and get a brand new unit.

anyone have pics of bose?

Someone said there are 3 different models (looks vary). I have and 97 SE and it came with the model with a column of buttons on the left and like how it looks. I've seen the other one that has the three buttons below the tape deck for CD/AM&FM/Tape. When did they use that one? Anyone have pictures of what this 99/99-L looks like? I'm just curious.

Anything is better than my lack of cd player (i havent owned a tape in about a decade).

Does anyone else think the earlier model sounds better than the later one? I know the one i have sounds GREAT (radio is all ive been able to play).

Yes mine is a stock BOSE double din HU from a 99se, i don't think the HU itself is a 900 dollar option, its the "premium sound" package hehe im not selling the speakers or anything, just HU, no wires etc.

If you are referring to the different HUs (one with analog **** controls & one with digital controls) go with the analog dial controls !!!

I had a 98 SE with the ***** and you could better tune the sound....my dad's 99 GLE has the digital controls and I barely hear the difference when adjusting treble & bass

Re: Recent Bose Replacement

You went backwards and it sounded better?? Interesting. The sound quality difference was with CDs or radio?? I tend to judge the quality of an HU strictly by the sound coming from a well made CD.

Here's a link of a BOSe shop. you can see the looks of the different Bose HU that came on the 95-99 Maxima.
