Amp problem!

I've posted this a few other place but thought i better ask here too. Maby it has happened to someone else. I'll copy and paste:

Quick question for you guys. I installed a Fosgate bd1000 as a temp amp. It is about 3 years old but was known to work about 6 months ago. All connections are correct and everything reads good. It played fine for the first 30 seconds and then i started hearing a strange humming noise. I run to the back of the trunk and the noise is coming from the sub and amp. I turned it off and checked everything. All was good. I go ahead and turn it back on. Same thing! Plays good for about 30 seconds and then starts humming. The gain was never more than a quarter up. I turned everything off and check everything one more time to make positive i wasn't just being stupid. Nope, all good. I turn it back on and get so sound at all. No hum or output to the sub. All the lights on the amp where lit up but no sound. It was strange to say the least. You could put your ear up to the amp and hear it humming on the inside. Turn it back off and let it set for about 30min. Turn it back on the sub is playing again but the same thing. Plays good for about 30 seconds and then starts humming.

I tried to narrow it down a little more. I disconnected the sub and rca's from the amp. Turned it back on and it didn't do anything for about a 45 seconds. Then the sound came back. Humming or actually very fast clicking from under the amp cover. That's with no input or output other than power and ground. Everything is secure and the voltmeter on the cap reads steady voltage when the noise i present.
I'm going to move the ground to another location as soon as i get off work. That is the only wire i moved but i made sure i sanded down to bare metal. Anybody have an idea???

Re: Amp problem!

How do you have this set up? What model amp, what model sub(s)? Depending on how you have it set up, your speakers load may be too low for the amp. This will almost act like a short to the amp and it will heat up really fast. Some amps have an overload protection circuit to protect them. This could be why your amp shuts down.

2001 Model Fosgate bd1000.1 500watts @ 4 ohms 1000watts @ 2 ohms

Older Fosgate Power Series 12 Single coil 1000 watts rms @ 4 ohms

The sub worked great just 2 weeks ago. The last time i checked the amp was about 5 months ago. It worked fine then. It has been ran at 2 ohms for the last 2 years.

Call RF tech support and describe it to them. But I have a feeling the amp is bad. If it was making the hum even with no input and no output hooked up, that's bad.

The specs for the amp say it can handle a 2ohm load. Maybe the amp just died Double check your ground too. good luck

Thanks guys. I went ahead and swapped amps to check it out. The other amp worked fine. Something funny is going on inside the Fosgate. I'm just glad it was a spare amp!
