Adding subwoofer

Not satisfied with my Infinity Basslink, I would like to add a real sub to my system. Any tips to help a newb do this? Mainly, would like to focus on driver and enclosure selection and where to buy. Is it best to hit a local car audio joint or can you do the whole schebang yourself (which I am prepared to do)? What are some good 12" drivers to buy and how do you decide what enclosure style/size to get for it? Looking to spend no more than $400-500 excluding the amp.

My setup hits extremely hard and it was very inexpensive.

2 - Kicker CVR 12's $180.
Generic Box $60

If you want more, look into Elemental Designs E12K, Adire Audio.

I was looking into an infinity basslink. Any reason why you dont like it? or do you just want more? I think i am just going to get a "real" system too. Because i have a feeling i will want more than what the basslink gives also. The system that Maximamaybe has sounds pretty good, he is happy with it and it did not cost alot. I will probely get something very similar. BTW www.ikesound.com has great prices and there is no shipping. I plan on getting this for my system, along with the pioneer HU that i already have...

-JBL BP300.1 300 watt amp, $145 shipped from ikesound.com
-4 ohm DVC 12" kicker comp VR sub, $90 shipped from ikesound.com
-1.25 sealed MDF box, $35 shipped from e-bay
-8 gauge amp wiring kit, $30 shipped from e-bay

This should be a pretty decent system for around $300 (depending on e-bay prices) and will only cost about $60 more than a basslink and wiring kit.

Thanks for the input guys. Will definitely check out the Kickers and the ebay box!

Smithdogg1, the Basslink is OK to fill in the low bass but the problem is there is no useable bass below about 35Hz. It has a 40Hz peak (in my corner loaded, vertically mounted setup) and drops like a brick after that. I was happy with it for a few months, but like a lot of things, it gives you a taste of the good life and leaves you wanting more!

I like the setup, but I highly recommend to spend $10 more and get the 4 guage kit. If not you might regret it in the future.

Why would i want to go with a 4 guage? I though that 8 was fine for 300-400 watt systems.

Thanks for the link...that's perfect for me. Just ordered it.
Went with the Dayton Loudspeaker DSC 12" driver from Parts Express for $160 shipped. Also got a 1 farad cap for $50 shipped from ikesound.com.

Reason I didn't go with Kicker CompVR is that I think you would need a pair to hit really hard. I think Xmax is only 11mm according to their spec sheet. For practicality, I just want one driver in a sealed box.

It is, but I am a big believer in not scrimping on wire. for $10, it is worth it.

1 Kicker Comp VR 12 hits very hard in my car. I have heard several 1 sub systems and mine is on par with them.
