Power antenna question for a '96 max.

Hi,

My power antenna fails to hide (go down) all the way so I'm planning to replace the whole system as its getting on in years. Anyhow, other than the dealer, where can I purchase a factory spec power antenna for my car?

Would an aftermarket antenna work and if so, which model (part number)? My concerns with aftermarket units is the fit and the connection to the factory radio (diversity cable). Its a non-Bose system.

Thanks in advance,

Chris...

i would assume that aftermarket antennas would be created to work with standard antenna slots which would mean that they would not work with the stock hu. you could look for a replace ment power antenna at a local junkyard, or you could go the "custom" route, and get a shorty antenna on your roof, and buy an aftermarket hu and make your max look trick.

you should try replacing just the mask first, since it only cost $13 at Autozone. I had the same problem the antenna won't go all the way down. After replacing the mask it works fine. I had my car for 7 yrs now w/ 170k miles the power antenna motor still works fine. Just replace the mask.

Do you mean the mast or mask (what is a mask if that is what you meant?)

This weekend I started to replace the mast armed with a shop manual and numerous web/email sources. The blasted mast did not want to come out as all of the sources indicate. I wound up removing the motor assembly but still can't get the mast out. It slides easily but hangs up on the last few inches inside the motor sleeve. Disassembly of the motor did not show any clues on how to remove the mast. I have been quite forceful with it but to no avail. Any suggestions? I have looked at the replacement mast for clues and there appears to be a lip around the bottom of the mast that I think acts as a stop. I think my next step will be to find a complete power antenna assembly.

Thanks for the link. I already had it. Took the motor with the attached old mast to the dealer for him to try to separate the two. The dealer placed the mast in the vice and pulled on the motor assembly. It finally came out. It just required more muscle than I was willing to give (not wanting to damage the assembly). I will be putting everything back tonight.

thanks for the imput...
