Sub Advice

I have a Rockford Fosgate 501BD amp and I have one 12" kicker CompVR sub in a box. So far I've fried my sub twice. I'm looking for a replacement sub that can handle the power from the fosgate. I was looking at the JL audio W126AE. What are the reviews on these subs? Or can someone recommend another sub for me?

u could get a 10" too. my sister had a 10 and i have a 12. the 10" is more accurate, but the 12 is louder and deeper.

10s are more accurate i suppose but for some reason people always seem to get 12s.

First, you need to find out why you fried the CompVR and fix the problem. The VR is only rated at 400w rms. The 501bd will put out close to 650w rms. Did you have the gains set high on the amp? Bass boost all the way up? Are you running sealed or ported? If ported, what size box and what do you have it tuned at? I ask all of this because i am currently running a single CompVR 12 until i get my new sub. It is in a 4.4 cubic ft slot port box tuned to 30hz. Getting powered by 800w rms @ 2 ohm. No indication what so ever that the sub is taking a beating. No noticeable distortion, no burnt voice coil smell, nothing. The Head unit is set with loud off, bass boost on HU and amp off, normal bass setting in the middle, and gain on amp set to 5v(lowest setting) with 4.5 being the pre-amp output.

For a sub recommendation, i would tell you to look here: Link

I had the gain turned below 1/2 up and I'm using a vented subzone box 1.93 cubic ft. tuned at 38hz. The box actually was designed for the CompVR from what I saw on subzone's site. I know the gain should have been turned all the way down and I did not have the boost more than 1/4 way up. No distortion either and I double checked my wiring of the coils on the sub. So that leaves me at a loss....especially after burning the second CompVR. The fosgate @ 4 ohms puts out 300 rms and at 2 ohms - 500 rms (according to the spec sheet). So the kicker should be able to sustain the power from the fosagate @ 4 ohms when wired correctly. I guess it doesn't work that way though. Thanks for the link.

Do you have the dual 2ohm or 4ohm VR12?

Fosgate amps are always underrated. It should actually put out 4xx@4 and 6xx@2. My old BD500.1 had a birth sheet of 679w rms @ 2ohms. Were you using the subsonic filter?

Are you running Stock or aftermarket head unit? Using RCA's or line output converter? There are a lot of little things that can easily fry a sub.

I'm using the stock Bose head unit with a line converter and I had the subsonic filter on. I know the stock head unit SUCKS. I eventually want to change the headunit but can't afford the in-dash DVD (Kenwood $2000) that I want right now

I would bet it was due to clipping. Here is something for you to read: Link.......

Tuned to 38 Hz, that's what more than likely what did it. That means anything below about 35 hertz or so and the sub was flapping like leaves in the wind. A good bass guitar note can hit as low as 30 hertz. And any bass CD would kill most subs in a box tuned that high.

I would have to agree with that too jmax. With his setup, it was probably a combination of both.

Both you guys are right I think. So I should have the subsonic filter on. I can't remember if I had the sub sonic filter on when I burnt the kickers. I was thinking about getting a JL Audio W6V2 to replace it. I thought I knew a lot but you guys taught me a few things in this post.

That would also be a great sub!

I hate to keep beating you up on this subject but i just want to help you find out what went wrong. This should help clear things up quite a bit. What happend when you fried the subs? Was the voice coil bad/wouldn't play(sign of clipping, over power) or did the spider seperated from the VC former...(sign of overexcursion).

There are other less obvious signs of mechanical stress. Voice coild being pulled too far from the gap could be silent depending on the motor design.
