OPINIONS WANTED: Upgrading my 2002 Bose speakers to...

the following:

A-Pillar tweeters:
Infinity Perfect T 1" tweeters

Front & Back Door 6-1/2":
Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components or Polk Momo MM6??

Sub:
12" Polk Momo MM124 in a box - should I use 1 or 2 subs??

I will still be using the Bose HU and will use an amp for the sub(s) (obviously), but I haven't decided on the amp to use. Will I need a separate amp to poewr the components?? All constructive opinions/comments are appreciated.

I like your choice of components. I also think the rear door might be overkill, but you can definately do it. You will need an amp for the Components as well. The Blose amp will not run the components very good at all. The reason is the Blose door speakers are 1 ohm and the Infinity are 4 OHM. Therefore, it will draw less power and give less sound.

As for the sub, I would personnaly choose a different sub. I am very happy with my Kicker CompVR 12, but you might want to look into Adire or Elemental Designs depending on your budget.

You will need a new amp for the doors, as the Bose amp is 1 Ohm versus an aftermarket being 4 Ohms.

As for keeping the Bose HU, that's your choice. I've had almost everything replaced in every possible combination in my 02, and the HU is definitely the weakest part of the whole Bose system. I replaced it with a $200 Kenwood HU with 22 watts and the Kenwood kicked the crap out of the Bose HU. Granted you will lose the in-dash CD changer, but that's a small price to pay for decent audio.

Replacing the speakers will help, but the most noticable gain will come when you replace the HU.

Look in the Audio Forum FAQ for a post by me with links to all the "Bose replacement" threads for more info and opinions.

So which are the better components to go with??? The Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1??? Or the Polk Momo MM6??? Why would components in the rear doors be overkill?? What would suggest for the rear doors instead of the components???

What other subs would you suggest to look at?? Should I go with one 12" or two 12"?? Honestly, I want crisp bass that hits and I can feel. Would it be better for our cars to go with sealed or ported subs??

I have seen many times how the Bose HU is the weakest part of the system and replacing the HU would be the last step. I have the Bose with in-trunk 6CD changer and the Navigation unit. I should be able to change out the HU and still use the trunk CD changer, right??? This would have no effect on the Navi, right???

Thanx in advance for all the help in answering my questions and giving your input to the discussion.

I would say that you could run a single 12" sub in a properly designed sealed box. You could try the Polk Momo sub, but also consider the subs mentioned above.

I would just run coaxials in the rear, a good infinity, polk, or even alpine set should run you about $100 to $150 @ most, saving you money for better amps.

Why are you going with the infinity tweets on top of the component set up front? You will have a spare set of tweeters that will be doing nothing.

If it was my money I would buy the polk momo components and try those on their own up front, go with a good set of coaxials (infinity kappas and polk dB series come to mind) in the back, and run either an Alpine type-R, Kicker COMP VR12, Polk Momo 12, or an infinity kappa perfect 12 in the back.

If you are not happy with the highs, THEN add the infinity tweets in place of the polk front tweets and move the polk tweets to a parallel configuration in the rear. To be honest, I might leave the rear BOSE in place at first, but that is your call. I am not big on rear fill, and I am never in the back, so I don't really care.

What are you considering for amps?

What's the best 12" sub to go with?? The main reason I have selected the Momo 12" is due to hearing a frined's Momo 12" perform...granted he has it in his hoo-banger (Civic Hatchback). I know hatchbacks & sedans give different sound responses from subs, but I thought his Momo 12" sounded great. What is the best 12"sub out there to get?? I'll be removing the Bose sub and using the hole as a port.

Not until you wrote did I realize that by putting components in the front will I have the tweeters (from the components) to put in the A-pillar. I was thinking of using the components for the back because I wanted to have some type of highs coming from the back. Is this a good idea?? Or a waste of money?? Where would be a good parallel configuration in the rear??? Is the Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 not better than the Polk Momo MM6?? WHat is a good set of coaxials to use for the rear if I decide to go that route??

I haven't made a decision on the amps I'll use. My hatchback friend is giving me a Phoenix Gold amp he said would be adequate for powering the sub (I think 1000W) and I'll be getting another amp to power the doors. Any suggestions on the second amp??

I 'll

I personally like the Kicker over the MOMOs that I have heard. A single sub would be fun unless you are just wanting a Bass machine. If you like the sound of the MOMO, go with it. If it was my money and I had a better budget, I would buy an Adire Audio 12 or the E12K from Elemental Designs.

I also prefer the Infinity Components. Mount the 6.5 in the door and the tweeter in the A Pillar. I also think it is a wast of money for nice speakers in the back. You want them for rear fill and the Bose is fine for that. If you want to spend more then by all means do it. PG Amps are excellent. I think one of those with either of those subs I mentioned will be awesome.

Good luck. I know it is a tough decision.

OK, how does the following sound to you guys for the speaker upgrades??? Will I need a capacitor???

FRONT DOORS & A-PILLAR:
Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 (tweeters in the A-pillar)

REAR DOORS:
Infinity Kappa 63.5

AMP TO RUN DOORS:
open for suggestions (please be as specific as possible)

I am now uncertain about what I will do for the sub (so many great suggestions have been given), but the sub will be enclosed and I'll be using the PG amp from my friend. Will/Should I use a capacitor for the sub?? For the door speakers?? For both??

Front and rear doors sound good.
A couple of good amps for the doors:
Phoenix Gold T400.4
Alpine MRP-F200

I also think Capaciters are overrated. If you have problems with the setup, upgrade your battery to an Optima Yellow or Red top.
