Why shouldn't you play CD-RW in the car?

I'm hearing that you shouldn't play burned CDs in your car because they're harmful to the CD player. I looked at the owner's manual, and it confirmed this, but didn't say why.... What's the reason?

it causes the laser in the cd player to make more passes to read the disk and any fine scratches or anything like that on a burned disk can cause it to make alot of passes again

If the player indicates it is CD-R / CD-RW capable I wouldn't worry about it. If it burns out the laser, get a replacement when it happens. Some of the cheaper CD-R's will flake apart over time. I would try to stay clear of those as the flakes in the player will surely interfere with proper performance.
