rear speakers will not work with new Pioneer CD player

a friend just installed a new Pioneer 4500MP CD player and the rear speakers will not work. They work with the factory tape deck, though.
We also got a speaker and hooked it up to the rear speaker wires on the wireing harness and they worked. So, there is nothing wrong with the wiring harness. He cannot understand why it doesn't work if he just plugs the wireing harness into the factor rear speaker plug.
Any suggestions?

also, does it have anything to do with the black wire that comes out of the factor rear speaker plug? We see there is a connector for it, but not on the new wiring harness. Would that have something to do with it?

Thanks

yeah, its an active speaker, but I don't know if it has its own amplification? Where would the amp be, if it did?

If you have a volt/ohm meter, I would try mearuring resistance between the wire on the speaker and the wires on the factory harness. This way you can see if there is a wire that runs straight through. You would need to do this for both wires on the speaker, obviously. Option B would be to just run some speaker wires from the dash back. Unfortunately, I do not wiring codes for a 3rd gen. This site may help.....
