mounting tweeters by the mids in the front door stock location..anyone done it?
Has anyone ever attempted to mount the tweeters of their component system besides the midrange speaker in the stock speaker location in the front doors of a maxima (specifically a 4th gen)? Any imaging issues? I was thinking of creating a custom plate where my stock speaker location is, and sort of mounting the tweeters so that they swivel out of the panel on their own angle to help imaging. Any comments highly welcomed.
I just did this, imaging isn't great but I didn't have very many options when I did the instal. Check out page 2 of my homepage to see how it came out. If you want a better pic let me know and I can get a closer one for ya.
When I had my '95, I had components in the front with the mid-range in the stock location of the door and the tweeter mounted in the door "sail" plate. Imaging was great. This seemed to be the best location for great sound.
While I'm sure this is common knowledge, I'll post anyway. The IDEAL imaging in cars is usually achieved with kick panels. The passenger tweeter is pointed at the driver and the driver's tweeter is pointed at the passenger. They meet somewhere in the middle and if you could sit directly in the middle of your car, you would get the best imaging.
That said, placing the tweeters in the stock 6.5 location and angling it like kicks SHOULD yield similar imaging. The problem is that the tweets will be further towards the rear of the car and harder to angle at the opposite side. That shouldn't stop you from getting pretty good imaging, just remember that perfect imaging is a science and requires measuring and PATIENCE. It also requires a good ear and usually a second person to verify what you are hearing.
Now, all that said, there is also something to be said for tweeters up high. It tends to raise your soundstage up to just above your dashboard which provides a nice sound and you can get decent imaging from this, particularly when you can angle your tweets properly. My tweets are stationary in the stock location in the doors (1998) and I get decent imaging and a good soundstage. My new headuunit provides for time delay so my imaging got WAY better from processing the sound, but even before that it wasn't so bad.
Hope this helps.

^^^ what he said
if you looked at mine you will see that they aren't pointed up which is why I don't have "great" imaging, but the time correction (I assume you have an Alpine HU also Big_Ham?) works wonders.

I also have an alpine unit with time correction (7894), so hopefully I will experience the same results after setting it up properly.
