wireless headphones...RF or I/R....

doesn't matter which one....my question is for the brands and etc...
is there a difference in quality between brands. can anyone suggest some good brands or sites or links for me to look out for. i was looking at some this morning and for $139, brand "unwired" has an I/R transmitter with personal volume controls for each headphone and an A/B switch on the headphone. the transmitter itself handles up to 2 sources, which is all i need.

so anyone got any suggestions or any advice or anything for me to work with.

i could also go with RF, to keep everything hidden, but then there's the worry of interference with my headunit, or do i not have to worry about that.

thanx guys

Polo,

I'd go I/R. That's what I did in the wife's Expedition. From what I've seen, most of these wireless headphones appear to be made by the same company. Visually, at least, they appear to be made the same. I went with a set from Audiovox and have no complaints.

If its just going to be used in the car go IR. I'm not sure if the radio will affect the RF signal but a guy I worked with had a pair of IR that he wanted to listen to when he would sleep and if he rolled over wrong he would lose the signal. He never mentioned any problem with interference once he switched to RF and we could use them in our store which might have 5 or 6 radios going at any one time.

That signal loss that he was experiencing was due to some type of obstruction in the path between the i/r transmitter and the headphones.

That's because I/R or Infra-Red uses the same technology as most remote controls.. A beam of light that contains information. This is easily obstructed by anything that blocks light, aka your hand, a wall, someone's head etc. R/F or Radio Frequency, on the other hand relies on a technology that's more commonly used for broadcasting audio signals, usually using FM-Band. This is not blocked by objects as much and is much less easily obstructed.

Hope that helps out.

Personally I think driving with headphones on is dangerous, but if I were going to do it I'd go with FM, because you could continue listening to the music outside of your car.

thanx everyone for your thoughts and opinions.
i wouldn't ride around with headphones. i was lookin at this more in a show standpoint. i'm adding screens in the headrests soon and was looking at headphone systems. it's not urgent, but at least now i know what's good and not good. i will most likely go for RF unless i get some weird feedback, which again, i doubt. we'll see.
but thanx.
