Misbehaving volume **** on oem HU

Does anyone have a suggested fix for the following...the volume **** rarely changes the volume up or down. Is there a safe way to remove the **** to access the metal contacts in the back to clean things up? My guess is that they've developed a film of dirt. I've already turned the **** many times trying to dislodge any dirt that might have built up over time but that hasn't do much good.

Oh yeah, I prefer listening to my Max than tunes so getting a new/used HU is not in the cards for me.

DoGGy just posted nearly the same problem. I just told him to try Factory Car Stereo Repair to see what they say.
