software and hookup for max to laptop?

I heard a person or two on the boards had software and a harness (I guess to go from OBD2 to something like a seriel port on a computer), so that they could hook the maxima up to a laptop and check out misc. things (obviously not to change anything) like timing (amongst other things) as well as using the laptop as a check engine light decoder.

Does anyone know what this is? where to buy it, or any information on it?

thanks for any help

(and I wouldn't know where to start in "search")

federal law states it must be within 1m of the steering wheel. most likely, its under your steering wheel towards the door.
