99 GLE Bose...several questions

I've been prerusing this forum for a little while, searching for my answer, but couldn't find a clear cut one. I would prefer to replace jsut my Bose HU with an aftermarket one....but apparently it will blow out the speakers? Any information on that would be appreciated.

Also, if that is not possible, what would be a reasonable estimate to replace my whole system. I would replace the HU, and all speakers, but wouldn't need separate subs in the trunk. I don't need huge bass...just good quality sound. So, an estimate on an HU and all speakers, not necessarily very top of the line, I don't have a huge budget, but nothing crappy either. Thanks in advance.

well, you could jsut do the HU, but yes you'll prob blow the speakers, there all self-amped. Your best bet is to do all new speakers, I'm using the stock tweeters, but there not very loud. I did a full re-wire, it takes patience, you can run the bose wire, but the wire isn't that great, but it can be used. You could do it all yourself, I had no experience with installing systems, except an electronics background, and mine turned out Ok. It all depends on how much you want to sepnd. If you got someone to install it, I would say at least 100, installers hate doing bose systems.

i would say for speakers +HU +install= around $800 or so. Remember, a little extra cost on quality goes a long way.

Since, new HU w/o new speakers is bad, is new speakers w/o new HU bad? I may have to break up the process, I make 5.40 an hour.

Would it be bad to put to throw in new speakers before the new HU? I imagine it might not sound so hot.

it might sound better then what u have now, but then again u got the factory hu. Its not gonna be that clear as aftermarket. Chances u might blow the speakers as well. Just save up money and do it all at once.

I agree, save up first and get it all together, less risky.

I'm cheap, it's hard for me to spend a bunch of money at one time...but that's what I'll do. Another question, what do they do about the extra space left from the Bose HU opening?

With a bose HU, you can get an adapter to use the stock bose speakers and it won't sound THAT bad. I ran this for about a year and just upgraded everything recently. You can get a 'pocket' from almost anywhere (dealer, crutch, etc.) (speaking of crutch, if you buy your head unit from them, they throw in the pocket for free. you can also get the adapter from them --but i admit they are $$$).

You can't do speakers first if you have Bose, since the amps are built into the speakers.

Oh, and when you do your speakers, you have to do a COMPLETE rewire. Can't use stock wiring. This is a ***** especially since you have to run speaker wire from behind the kick panel through the door "hose" into the door. Depending on the speakers you get, you'll probably have to do some modification work on the door itself for your tweeters and mids to fit properly. It's definitely NOT a plug and play situation. I learned the hard way myself.

Good luck... PM me if you have any questions, since I just went through all this myself.
